I looked at getting one of these a while back after reading some good reviews, but unfortunately it does not recognise the 'apple' music format of AAC (or whatever it is called). Really regret converting my old CDs to this format rather than mp3s

That is true, I hadn't considered that.
Never was an option for me really, since I don't have a single AAC file, but of course it will be a big no-no for all those who do.

You must have a bunch of them to not be considering going back and re-ripping them?

Strangely enough, it's not actually the CDs which are the problem as when I first introduced to the world of ipods I used the factory settings on itunes and hence it is easy to see which are my ripped CDs as they are all m4a, 128kbps (only ~200 albums). At some time I intend on going up into the loft and re-ripping using 256vbr mp3 (although I have been planning on doing that for well over a year and probably never will). The bigger problem is that for a long time I used to download stuff off mp3sparks using MPEG-4 , and there is no way I'm forking out the cash to redownload those . Anyway, I'm happy enough with my ipod so although a little irratated by the whole formatting thing, I can live with it ,
Cheers,
Dave

Dave have you not thought of converting your MPEG4 files to mp3?
There are plenty of converters available that will do that and you will then end up with your library in a universal format.

If you have one watch you know what the time is. But if you have two you don't know which one is right.
The more advice you get the more confusing it becomes.

Hey Dave,
At least they are drm-free and you have a way to listen to them,
and now you are enlightened to your options.
It's all good.
Cheers,

I have though about that but was concerned that there would be a loss of quality associated with the conversion . Also, I had read that the conversion programs tend to mess up tags & album art work and I can not face retagging 700 albums .

Update:
Seems that once again Vik has come up with the answer.
