New releases in low quality - 11-01-2007, 11:09 AM

I noticed that Fiesta seems to be lowering their compression standards, eg Little Jimmy Scotts CD has been encoded around 150kpbs as has Roisin Murphy's latest CD. I emailed assistance for an explanation and am anxiuosly waiting for their reply....

150 kbps isn't an issue for me because cd quality is 128kbps, but there was an album that I wanted to download and I didn't because one of the songs was at bitrate 123. I didn't email support about it though. I don't want to bombard them since I wrote them recently about somehting else that I am waiting on.

Really? - 05-22-2008, 07:01 AM

Wait....128 kbps is CD quality? I was under the impression CD quality was 320 kbps or better. I converted some of my 320 kbps mp3's to wav just to make sure it would play in my car and it says they are 1411 kbps (not a typo). Yes I'm an audiophile if you hadn't guessed already. Am I missing something here?

Sort of a side note, is it possible to up-convert this music from mp3 fiesta from the lower quality? Thanks.

Hi mojo2093

128 kbps is NOT CD-quality, 320 kbps is much better but not what audiophiles would regard as genuine CD quality either. They need lossless (for instance .FLAC, .optimFROG, .PCMWave or .APE)

And you have forever lost the sound quality of your music files, if you have ripped your CD's into 128 kbps to begin with. You'll have to rerip your CD collection into 320 kbps files, if you want a better quality than with your 128 kbps.

Converting you 128 kbps tracks into 320 kbps ditto will only make your files larger - not better quality-wise

Solaris is absolutely right

It is completely pointless converting 128 kbps files (or 320 for that matter) to any higher bitrate.
You will only increase the size of the file, it will make no difference to the sound quality.
The majority of the detail and body in the music would have been lost when it was converted to a low bitrate, and you can`t just add that back in by making a larger file.
Lossless is a good compromise as it has the sound quality of the original CD but takes up less space.

Yeah that is what I thought about the encoding. No I never ripped my music at such a low bitrate. Thanks for the info.

Well this is why I was confused. To me it looked like you said CD quality is 128 kbps or were you laughing at it?

Thanks for the info Solaris and Starcat. I'm always eager to learn, especially about the specifics of music quality and what not.

I was laughing at the claims of the previous poster (see quote below):
