Thumbs up Dengue Fever - 01-26-2008, 06:10 PM

Came across this band after reading a review of their latest album on metacritic.com. I've played the album (Venus on Earth) to death now and it still sounds excellent. I guess those of you from the US will be familiar with the band, but it was a new one for me. There is a good review of the band on allmusic (allmusic ((( Dengue Fever > Biography )))) so I am not going to try describing them, but they are very different from stuff I usually listen to,
Cheers,
Dave C

OK....I'll take the bait!
Which site did you find it (them) on?
Seeing that they are a local band (Long Beach) I will check them out.
Long Beach is the next town over from me.

I got the album I mentioned off emusic, but I am sure the some of the other sites will pick it up soon. Got one of their other albums, called Dengue Fever (which is not quite as good as Venus on Earth, but gives you a taste) off mp3fiesta. Mp3sparks has another album which I will probably download tonight,
Cheers,
Dave C
NB. I am always amazed at why the download sites do not seem look at the albums which get reviewed on Metacritic.com and pick up the albums which get a good rating. It is a really well visited site and I can not be the only person who uses it as a good place to find albums to download.

Dave,

Are they oriental singers with a really good band..
I think I have heard of them before but haven't checked them out yet,
but I believe I have in the past ..the word I have to describe them is
weird and compelling...If it's the same band.

Mixing Cambodian pop to rock music is pretty weird, and their music is compelling so it might well be the same band. I could see this being your kind of thing Nightfly,
Cheers,
Dave

Thanks for the condolences! It has been pretty miserable here the last week or so. Lotsa rain and it got real cold, down to about 45 degrees I believe.
Can't wait for the spring thaw

Dave;

Darn...emusic was the one site that I didn't check.
I did download a few tracks off of myspace and found the songs very interesting, to say the least! I did like them though and will hit the emusic site when I get home later.
I found it interesting that the two brothers (name escapes me) write some of the songs in english and then translate to cambodian at a later date. I don't write songs, but that must be pretty tough to do.
Thanks for the recommendation!

Mark

My favourite song so far is the third track (Tiger phone card, listen to sample here on the amazon site:- Amazon.com: Venus on Earth: Music: Dengue Fever) off the newest album. Could certainly make as a single I reckon and it is one which is sung in english (real mix of languages on all of the albums).
Cheers,
Dave C

Dave;

Finally got around to downloading the two albums off of emusic (Escape From Dragon House and Venus on Earth) and am currently listening to "Escape" and really like it. Sni Bong is playing now.
There is one track (Saran Wrap) #10 that was not available for download. This is on the Escape From Dragon House album. I can assume it is because of using a brand name, but was wondering if it was he same for you in the UK?
I am off to check out Fiesta for the other one you mentioned. I believe I checked before and found it only in 128kbs, but may download it anyway. Maybe I can increase the quality by using one of those programs that are mentioned on some of the threads that can take a 128kbs track and increase it to 320!
I was also incorrect in assuming that the band was from Long Beach. They are actually from the Silver Lake district which is up more towards the LA/Hollywood area. Apparently they searched the Long Beach area for the singer.

Thanks - Mark
