He threatened his accountant with a gun . . . for trying to send him money. He had the kind of problems I want!

Fine cast of aggressive players there.

Where did you get it?

Thanks again,
Hi Nightfly, good to see you are feeling better

I got it on Sparks (down to my last $20) but it is also available on eMusic. Quite good value on eMusic though as some of the tracks are 7 and 8 minutes long. I would ckeck it out on Sparks for the full length previews and because, for some reason, eMusic does not list the "friend" on the individual track. There is a good review of the album on eMusic, as well.

Squash,

I am feeling better...thanks so much for the well wishes...

Yes sometimes eMusic doesn't tag there mp3s
with special performers but will list the performers on the
page with links to them..but on the mp3's....nada.
But I paste and copy the page to word and print it out for reference.

I will be getting this tonight...will write back about it tomorrow.

Thanks again,

Nightfly

Thanks again,

Squash,

Got the album from Sparks...needed the tracks guest performers.
I plan to let my students "borrow" this one and here how it's done
and to hear some names that are great players, but not as mainstream as some. One thing that I think that holds Walter Trout back, while I think
he one of the best electric bluesman out there, his song writing
is not that great .His songs are just vehicles for his blistering guitar playing
and his voice is to forced for my liking..But that doesn't really matter
because it's all about his guitar playing...People have asked me why he's not more "famous" and I think that's the answer. But he has a large following
and people in the know, know how good he is.I'd like to find a album where
he plays more classic or standard compositions...I'll check out his stuff
with The Free Radicals.

But Full Circle is a must for any fan of aggressive electric Blues playing.
Usually these duet albums are lackluster love fests...not so here,
each player plays in full throttle and as you said this has a spontaneous
feel.Live in the studio..doesn't get much better.
4 and a half stars.(out of 5)

Contemporary Blues - 03-05-2008, 06:58 PM

Hi all, as ever I'm hopeful for your guidance on the subject of Contemporary Blues. My Electric Blues collection is pretty healthy due to Nightfly's excellent posting last year but over time (some distant, some recent) I have built a thin collection of more modern blues. I guess the term 'Contemporary Blues is quite hard to define and far reaching, but what I've got as a basis so far is:

Plenty of Stevie Ray Vaughan - some meet my 'contemporary needs and some doesn't
Loads of Clapton ditto
Some Ry Cooder ditto
Walter Trout - Full Circle - Thanks for recommend Squash
Seth Walker - Seth Walker
North Mississippi Allstars - Thanks for pointing me to the right albums Nightfly
The Hoochie Coochie Men with Jon Lord
Dion - Son of Skip James
David Gilmour
Bryce Janey
Bryan Lee
Ben Harper - Lifeline
Jeff Healey
Chris Rea
Steve Earl
Some of my 'Velvet Revolver' & Skynyrd' fits in well too.

Just writing this list makes me realise I'm wandering around a bit and I'm asking for recommends from a very wide area of music.

I guess to try to tighten things up a bit the perfect thing would be to be able to put the collection on for a long party and have some really good Bluesy tunes but nothing to divert people too much.

Am I really digging a hole for myself here

Anyway if anyone can pick up half a thread of what I'm on about I'd be happy to hear

Put in some:

Buddy Guy ...is very relevant "Steppin Out Steppin In" with Double Trooble
and Johnny Johnson(Chuck Berry piano player) produced by Hedrix producer.
Luther Allison..
Albert King....Live and "Born Under a Bad Sign"
Albert Collins
R.L.Burnside
Jr.Kimborough
Johnny Winter

All these guys are originators of electric blues and still rock hard.
Some have recently passed but their late works still had
a great deal of fire.Buddy Guy is better than ever.
And all create the same Juke Joint mood of where they used to play.
Rockin little clubs.

Hi Nightfly, what a surprise you replying first

The Buddy Guy sounds interesting, especially with the company he's keeping and whilst I've got some Albert King I'll check out the album you suggest. I'm ashamed to say I haven't heard of the others (but then again I was after education). Looks like the weekend's going to be fun

The R.L. Burnside one check out "Come On In" blues with just a bit of hip hop cool album.
R.L. Burnside was featured on the Live Mississippi Allstars I recommended.(the old man jamming in the middle of the album)He was their main influence.Jr Kimborough is sort of esoteric but infuenced
MSA's and R.L.B as well ,check out "All Night Long" by him (eMusic) very primitive and atmospheric.

Have a blast and a rockin good time!
