Hi Dave.
I first got into the blues through 'modern' rock/pop music. I was listening to All Along The Watch Tower on the album Rattle and Hum by U2 and just happend to notice on one of my dads Jimi Hendrix tapes(remember them!) the same song and thats how I got into Jimi. I then traced a few of his songs back to their origional source ie Catfish Blues - Muddy Waters, Killing Floor - Howlin' Wolf, Watchtower - Bob Dylan. The same was true from listening to my dads rolling Stones albums, many of their first releases were covers of the early blues artists like Muddy and Wolf. I suppose what I'm trying to say in a convoluted manner is that many of todays rock artists are influenced by those guys and some of your record collection might contain reworkings of those old classics. So by tracing things back you might 'discover' you already like the blues.
Someone else has already mentioned this album somewhere on this forum but ill flag it up again, London sessions by Howlin' Wolf. He is accompanied by, amongst others, Eric Clapton, Steve Windwood and 2 Rolling Stones in Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts. Wolf's work has become very influencial and has been coved by a wide range of artists from Megadeth to PJ Harvey.
You could try Hard Again by Muddy Waters who is another great blues man who's influence is far reaching. Buddy Guy is a good choice too.
All the best
