Thumbs up Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy - 09-30-2007, 12:37 AM

I am sure everyone already knows this, but I just downloaded 'Louis Armstrong Plays W.C. Handy' for something different to listen too (now my oldest album) and it is excellent. Going to have to try some more jazz stuff soon,
Cheers,
Dave C

Dave,

You have just entered Jazz Nirvana with that one! This is the roots
of all progressive Jazz and one of the greatest early Jazz records.
To understand and appreciate this album is to understand everything that
comes afterwards. You are on your way my friend.
And this is why I spend so much time here..Its about the sharing
of ideas and music...most excellent.

He has certainly got the most fantastic voice, and one of the tracks even starts with a joke I laughed out loud too,

Dave,

I have the perfect record for you "Ella and Louis"
with Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong...
They made 3 albums together all classics
and the contrast of Louis's gravel voice and Ella's smooth voice
is a incredible combination and of course Louie blows some
mighty trumpet.

See ya,

Nightfly

Cool thanks - 10-19-2007, 12:01 AM

Ta for the recomendation guys. I'm more of a blues man and never really considered listening to Louis (I respect the man for his musical prowess but 'Jazz' has never really grabbed me). So when I saw an album of W.C. Handy's work I gave it a go and I love it. I can't listen to it all the time though as I find it too 'happy' compared to the Blues if you get my meaning.

Thanks again

Hey Rederic,

Louie can really get low down and sad with his blues as well..

Check out the tune by Louis Arrmstrong "Black and Blue"
makes you want to cry...if that's what you're looking for in
your blues...
Louie was one of the first great interpreters
to bring Blues into Jazz, prior to that it was done by W.C. Handy
and Bessie Smith.

Glad you enjoyed Louie,

Nightfly

hy dave c - maybe you start with Buddy Guy-Bring 'Em In 2005 (sparks), which is one of the best latest blues album for me. He´s playing with guests like Carlos Santana, Tracy Chapman, John Mayer, Keith Richards and others. His version from bob dylans lay lady lay with Anthony Hamilton & Robert Randolph is marvelously. enjoy!
