Walter Trout - The Outsider - 07-03-2008, 09:50 AM

Stunning new album from Walter Trout - electric blues guitarist par excellence (and great vocals to boot)

Do yourself a favour and listen to the track "Child of Another Day" - duelling Strat and harmonica like you would not believe - just mind blowing!!

Be interested to hear Nightfly's opinion of this.

Highly recommended - 5 stars

My feelings on this album is what I think of most of Walter Trout's
albums, amazing fierce guitar playing that puts him right up there
with the best, but I don't think much of him as a songwriter.
He tries to jam as many cliches as he can fit into every song
and he wants so much to be significant...First rule of the
blues, keep it simple and let your axe do the talking.

But that being said, this album should not be missed by
any blues fan because of the very fine musicianship.

GASP!! You listen to the lyrics

For me, the 'message' is the least important component of a song. I tend to treat the voice as another instrument. Probably something I have picked up through opera where so much is in Italian, French and German. Even with operas sung in English, it is often difficult to discern the words. Of course, with a lot of folk and ballads, the lyrics are the justification for the song, but even here, after the first couple of listens, it is the total musical and vocal package that keeps it on a reasonable rotation with me. A lot of Dylan's best folk songs could be sung in French and they would still be great songs to listen to.

I can't understand why Walter is not better known mainstream. His live concerts are sold out wherever he goes in the world. Maybe it's the name - Walter Trout - it just does not sound "really cool electric guitar". Perhaps if he changed it to Led Zappa or Jimmy Edge, that would help

Cheers,

Squash

And he definitely need a better blues name like Walter"Mississippi"Trout...
I don't care where he comes from...........
