Heard Perlman in Lincoln Center very recently. Every recital of his is quite an adventure. It's amazing what presence one man can possess and what an amazing violinist. He played maybe 6-7 enchore pieces and the audience was still screaming for more. What a man!

P.S. I play violin myself - albeit, not so well!
Did not know you play..so I would trust your judgement..I liked Bell's set
but of course it was a light Romantic period set..like his album he was promoting..It was pleasant, but not much substance I guess..I saw
Pearlman as well at Carnegie and 92nd st Y..What a thrill !!!..At Carnegie
full orchestra and at the Y doing Mozart violin sonatas with piano... my favorite works! David Oistrakh was before my time but I collect his recordings he reaches me... And saw Stern and Pearlman do the Bach double one of my greatest classical moments that I play in my head from time to time. Saw Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg a few times little quirky..tells the audience to be quiet(good for her)..but she reminds me of Oistrakh in the way
she attacks the very high strings with such tonal clarity..and has great passion...

Edit: I will definetely add Maxim Vengerov and Vadim Repin to my list..
though I do have Vengerov doing a program of Mozart which is wonderful
and is in my recent classical rotation..Can you make recommends for these
two artists when you have a chance...I saw online Vengerov has a Shostakovich
cyckle with Rostropovich...sounds like it would be my kind of program.

You don't have to trust my judgement. It's all a matter of taste really. I think I saw a plaque in Avery Fischer Hall (Lincoln Center) with Joshua Bell's name as Artist of the year for the past 3-4 years. Go figure. I'm definitely not a fan.

Yes, Oistrakh is a true great. I love seeing those black and white scratchy recordings. He strikes me as a man of steel with the violin. So firm on his feet when he plays. None of tha walking about the stage nonsense Yet, his style is so evocative, so passionate.

I love Bach's double violin concerto. Played it back in the days. lol. Both part. Not at the same time

I've not heard Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg live, I think. At least not that I recall. Do know the name though.

That would upset me as well..I think that is a bit to much.

I trust your judgement because you play violin and even if you didn't,
I have learned to trust your recommends because of your excellent taste.

Suggest you check out the DVD called "The Art of the Violin". I like it very much. Acquired it after seing the program on PBS a number of times.
As I recall the DVD featured Korcia, Hahn, Menuhin, Perlman, Rostropovich and a few others (but not Bell or Vengerov).

Shahan has released a CD called 'Schubert for Two' with Sollscher on guitar. The Ave Maria (final track) is breathtakingly beautiful - one of my favorite pieces of 'swoon' music.

I guess, the DVD had been made a few years back (~2000ish?), and I think its more proper name would the "The HISTORY of the Art of the Violin". It definitely doesn't included any of thew newer generation. Don't mind the exclusion of Bell - but would definitely include Vengerov. He's probably this generation's best.

Vik

P.S. Rostropovich isn't a violinist... Too late in the night now to dig up the DVD. Perhaps he does make an appearance in the DVD in some capacity.

I don't recall saying he was. He 'features' as a commentator - along with the youngsters, Hahn (20's) and Korcia (30's) - but not Vengerov.
