Fantasia ..The Sound Track - 08-01-2007, 05:51 AM

"Fantasia" The Disney Sountrack to the classic animated film of
the same name, is a wonderful companion piece to the DVD to introduce
children to Classical music as well as a good sampler for aldults..

This soundtrack was done in 1939 by one of the greatest conductors
and interpreters of modern classical music Leopold Stokowski. On
this recording he gives The Philadelphia Orchestra a bold, forward
moving performance that these mostly modern pieces deserve.
The sound could be better, after all this music was made as a soundtrack
and stereo was something brand new at this time. But the grand
performance and the newer remix more than compensates for any of
these flaws. These are the following pieces on the soundtrack:

Toccata and Fugue.....Bach
Nutcracker Suite (excerpts).....Tchaikovsky
The Sorcerers Apprectice.......Dukas
The Rite Of Spring(2 Pt's. Ballet).....Stravinsky
Symphony #6 "Pastoral"(1st Movement)....Beethoven
Dance of The Hours (some know this as hello mother, hello father).. : ) ...... La Gioconda
Night on Bald Mountain...Mussorgsky
Ave Maria....Shubert

This can be found on Mp3sparks

Hi Nightfly

As you say, this is a very nice album to introduce children to classical music. To those who like it, I also recommend Fantasia 2000 (available at Sparks too), where you can find some contemporary pretty nice pieces like Rhapsody In Blue, by Gershwing.

I love both the original classic Fantasia and Fantasia 2002. I remember writing a paper in a freshman seminar in college about Fantasia. Very tempted to go dig it up and reread what I wrote on the subject back then.

Hello Kalvin,

Yes Fantasia 2000 is also a lovely companion to the DVD..I
too like the Orchestrated version of Rhapsody in Blue here and I also
like Piano Concerto# 2 by Shostakovich..One is because I like the composer and I never thought it was possible to use his music in animation, but Disney did a great job with this piece of music.. But both this and the original
Fantasia make for a very nice listen...

Thanks for your interest,

Nightfly

I first saw this movie in 1974 they had a special Re-Release showing of it at Radio City Music Hall with Speakers about 25 feet high at the front of the stage and And a screen 2xs as lage...It had a impact on me for the rest of my life..It was like being at the best rock concert ever(even though this was Classical) during a Night at Bald Moutain the floor literally shook when the large Demon came out...the little one's started to cry..
I must admit I was a little scared too
But all ended happily when Mickey came out next as The Soccerer's Apprentice..
