Gulda and Zawinul - 08-17-2007, 02:59 AM

A favorite classical pianist is Freidrich Gulda, particularly his Beethoven recordings. I was aware he also had an interest in jazz but, until recently, had never come across any recordings of his in this genre. On mp3sparks you will find a 2006 release of a famous 1988 concert in Colonge where he performed with Joe Zawinul and his band. It is titled "Music for Two Pianos" .
There are only three tracks - the first a 20 minute Brahms variation on a theme by Haydn (thus justifying inclusion in a classical thread) which I loved. The next next a long jazz variation with the band, and while I am not much into modern jazz, this sounds great. The last short track is back to two pianos and is a showstopper.
The recording is very good for a live performance.
A pity I don't speak german so as to know what is being said in the short spoken introduction.

Thanks squash..being a lover of Classical and Jazz this sounds like
my kind of recording, with two fine pianists. I will definitely check it out..Thanks for the recommend..I will let you know what I think after listening.

Edit: Many Thanks...was listening to this one tonight what a treat..It is actually
quite beautiful ..even the last more modern piece..what playing..If you didn't recommend this,
I never would have known about it ,and would have been missing out on something special..
I also will be looking for more recordings by Freidrich Gulda

Thanks,

Nightfly

Thanks,
There is a 2 CD set on Decca's budget label, London, of Beethoven piano sonatas that I highly recommend. (I have not seen much Gulda in the online shops, however). His jazz stuff is very rare - a recording released a year after his death of him live at Birdland one of the few that I know about. His bio on Wikipedia also talks about a collaboration with Chic Corea at one time but I have never come across any of this in my musical meanderings. I might compile a list of Gulda albums and submit them to the admistrator at Sparks for possible inclusion in their catalogue.
All the best,
Squash

Thanks Squash,
I will search for this one used on Amazon..and adding Gulda's name to the list of artists at Sparks sounds like a wonderful idea.

Thanks again,

Nightfly
