Gustav Mahler - 06-02-2007, 04:57 PM

I would like to recommend for those who love Gustav Mahler from the Aomp3 catalogue the following:

Symphony No.2 (Pierre Boulez, Wiener Philarmoniker) 2006 -****

Symphonie No. 5 (Wiener Philharmoniker, Leonard Bernstein) 1988 -*****

Lieder - Berliner Philh.- Karl Bohm (Fisher - Dieskau Ed) 2006 -****

Mahler - Symphony No 1, Titan 1990 - Leonard Bernstein -****

If you could only have the chance to find it, also in cd, please don't forget Kindertotenlieder - Wiener Philarmoniker - Kathleen Ferrier - Director Bruno Walter (Mono recording - remastered 1987). For me Bruno Walter has been one of the most important directors of all times, and I love his direction mainly in Mahler and Mozart (The Magic Flute).

Ciao

Harold..What can I say.. I love Mahler...I own the Complete Cycle by Bernstein ... and Walter knew Mahler and had a real affinity towards his work
I love Bruno Walters Titan Symphony 1 .. with all this said have you ever heard George Szell and Cleveland Orch. do Symphony 4...it is beautiful and
one one of Mahler's lighter pieces expressing the hope and renewal of spring..
Thank you so much for bringing this important composer to the forum.

You're very welcome. I just think all of us here love music deeply and everyone has his own experience and feelings. We feel well togheter because there's no other hidden matter than our love for music. This means we love life and all its colours and differences. That's why this forum will grow bigger and bigger. At least that's why I feel really well here. In this mad house of mine now, my son is changing his ipod list and preparing a new music dvd, my daughter is listening to Handel (she sings in the choir). The only one working is my wife (cooking) lol.

Anyway I'm glad you love Mahler too and I think we will talk about him for a long time. In the meanwhile I hope we will be able to share our passion with all the other friends here.

Ciao

Wren .. Good for you...Let me warn you..I didn't get Mahler the first time I heard him...but if you hang in there.. I think you will be rewarded with a rich
musical experience of swirling rhythms ,melodies and emotions ...

Try the 2nd and the 4th to begin with I think they are the most accessible

Harold...What do you think?..How about the songs? I'm not as familiar with those... and can you recommend some of the song cycles to me..most
important the best singers for those cycles..

Good Luck Wren,
Nightfly

You have covered my sentiments exactly..people here have a great musical
tolerance for each other.. where you don't find everywhere..and that's what true music lovers are searching for..a safe haven where they will not be judged but respected for their diversity...now if we can channel some of this positive energy out into the real world..in all life situations..we would really have something going on...
Peace,
Nightfly

Mahler and Rugby - 06-13-2007, 07:43 AM

Hi all,
I love music (and rugby) but did not listen to much Mahler until I was given a boxed set of his Symphonies played by the magnificent Chicago Symphony Orchestra under Sir George Solti. I was watching a Rugby test match on TV and became tired of the inane commentary which, to my mind, was spoiling the spectacle of the sporting contest. So I decided to switch off the sound and put Mahler's 5th on (loud) and listen to it at the same time. My ears nearly fell off as the combination was so good - sometimes the drama of the music exactly matched what was occuring on the field. This work is now one of my favorites and I really enjoy choosing various pieces of classical music to listen to while watching sport on TV (it works with cricket too!!).
I know Solti has attracted criticism for his interpretation of Mahler's music as too 'brutal' and 'unsubtle' but it works for me and I recommend the entire set without reservation. Some of the works are also available individually including another favorite, the 2nd.
All the best.

You created your own sound track to a Rugby match...Interesting! I know the 5th very dramatic and emotional... I have never considered Solti's interpretation's but I will seek his out and give them a listen.. I like Bernstein's, Szells, Walters but they are typical.. I need a fresh approach ..for a new experience.
Take care,
Nightfly
