Lightbulb Incredible Chamber Music? - 01-05-2008, 07:42 AM

i've been trying to expand my tastes in this genre a bit, and I was just thinking it would be useful to construct some kind of list of the most sensational chamber music pieces (for starters, say string quartet or piano quintet). Maybe a top ten? So I did some listening, and based on the pieces I've heard, I think I'd place:

1. Dvořák - Piano Quintet No. 1 in A
(at least in my opinion, the winner by a large margin)

2. Thuille - Piano Quintet in E-Flat
(an unlikely find, but superb in many ways)

3. Schubert - Quartet No. 14, 'Death and the Maiden'

4. Dvořák - Quartet No. 12, 'The American'

5. Shostakovich - Piano Quintet in G Minor

6. Beethoven - Quartet No. 7, 'Razoumovsky'

7. Mendelssohn - Quartet No. 3 in D Major

8. Schumann - Piano Quintet in E-Flat

9. Mozart - Quartet in C Major, KV.157

10. Shostakovich - Quartet No. 8

and an honorable mention, Dohnányi's Piano Quintet No. 1 in C Minor.

Are there any similar chamber music pieces (or lists that could completely replace mine) that belong? I guess it really is more a Romantic chamber list than anything else. it's nice knowing that these will be around during the wait for payment to come to life again!
and it's good to see the forums again.
I should've posted much more when I was here last!

Hi TrueHende2.

Wow, this must be something for vikulenka and squash54 to "sink their teeth into"

We really do have a wide range of musical tastes in this forum (which is great)

Truehende2,

Great list....

I lean more toward The Haydn and Mozart Quartets .. I guess lighter fair,
but you did mention the k.157 (I forget the #) which is also a favorite of
mine.

But I enjoy the Bartok Quartets done by The Emerson String Quartet
which I guess would be Post- Romantic

and you didn't mention "The Trout" by Shubert...I guess it is kind of
a warhorse but I still love it. My favorite is The Beaux Arts Trio with
Alfred Brendell on Piano

In Baroque I like The Handel String Trio's and later works of Vivaldi.

The early Beethoven String Quartets also done by the Emerson
String is really a classic series of recordings of this early cycle.

I will try to formulate a list of top 10 favorites like yours but it will be
hard ..
But yours is really diverse and interesting. I think I will
check out the Shostakovich selections of yours.
But I have to be in the mood ......

Thanks,

Nightfly

I'm definitely with you there...
The more genres, the better! Everything just becomes more interesting to
talk about. It wouldn't be anywhere near as exciting to be on a site where
everyone's favorite artist was Bob Marley. Nothing against Bob Marley.

Nightfly,

I also like many Mozart/Haydn quartets... I just tend to get
a little lost in the sheer number of them, and didn't really feel like I'd heard
enough of them to choose the best well.

Bartok sounds interesting though, I'll for sure have to check that out. The Emerson quartet is probably my favorite

The Trout is also one of my favorites! I guess for some reason, it slipped my mind

I don't have much in the way of baroque, but I do have Corelli and like that pretty well. I'll check out your picks... and good luck making your list!

Yes Corelli is definitely underrated in baroque...great choice..
you inspired me to go find some recordings by him..I have
some old 70's recordings on CD nice warm analog original recordings,
by Neville Marriner and St Martins Academy in The Fields

Bartok is something that took me a time "to get" but once
I did I became a fan of his music.

Take care and welcome to the Forum
