Thumbs up Jean-Baptiste Lully - 11-30-2007, 01:50 AM

I am very fond of French Baroque composer Jean-Baptiste Lully
who I feel is much underrated and he reminds me a great
deal of Handel because his music is grand and dedicated to "The Court"

I would like to recommend a recording on Emusic
It is Vol 1 of 3 Grand:Moets on Naxos, who always puts out
beautiful recordings. This one is no exception.

Done by Le Concert Spirituel (Ensemble)
Herve Niquet is the conductor

LULLY: Grand Motets, Vol 1, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic

Excellent recommend Nightfly - there are some great Naxos recordings on Emusic.

Can I reciprocate by recommending an album (not Naxos) on Emusic by Paul Robeson. It's called 'On My Journey:Paul Robeson's Independant Recordings'. Link:On My Journey: Paul Robeson's Independent Recordings, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic

All of the tracks are above 192 and, while there is some hiss apparent on some tracks, the quality is generally excellent. Robeson's sonorious and cavernous bass baritone is full and clear on every song. Even one of the teenagers in my household stopped in her tracks and took notice of his 'Amazing Grace' as it boomed out over my monitors.

Dave, and any other Brit sports fans that lurk here, Robeson's version of 'Swing Low' is a must have.

This is the best Robeson recording I have heard and if you want to hear one of the greatest voices of the last century, this is as good a place to find it as any.

Thanks Squash,

I didn't have any Robeson because I didn't like the recordings..
These are excellent... I had 14 DL's left and used it to DL my favorites
from a hefty 32 track collection.Very spiritual man and these recording
are a reflection of that.

Robeson had an extrordinary and contoversial life, quite apart from the wonderful gift of his voice. It has always amazed me we have never had the Hollywood blockbuster about this character.
I was surprised that his signature tune - 'Ol Man River' - was not on this album. An interesting piece of trivia is that Robeson was actually the first person to perform at the Sydney Opera House. He was touring Australia in 1960 and visited the site where the building was still under construction. He then climbed on to the scaffolding and sang 'Ol Man River' to the construction workers
