Yes please do, everything is his fault, and the best part is he doesn't care...
But I will let you know about Gorecki as soon as I do some discovery
of my own.I have heard passages that I have enjoyed but never got
a whole album of his work.I will share whatever I discover with you.
Take care,
Nightfly

Henryk Gorecki (pronounced Gorechki) is a Polish composer best known for his 'minimalist' 3rd Symphony - commonly called his Symphony of Sorrowful Songs.
The most popular recording of this work has David Zinman conducting the London Sinfonietta with Dawn Upshaw, soprano.
However, there is quite a good version on eMusic here : GORECKI: Symphony No 3 / Three Olden Style Pieces, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic
The music is slow, melancholy and very beautiful, particularly the last two movements.
Highly recommended

Even after nearly thirty years he's very sadly missed but, as I said, your avatar brings some very fine memories flooding back - thanks

Hirs,
I'm glad I changed my avatar then..I was inspired by Squash's Russian Blue.
Pumpkin is also "my" cat ..He is also very much like a dog,he shares my sandwiches, sleeps by my feet, and watches tv with me(whenever I do,
not a big tv fan these days) and obviously keeps me company online...
His kidneys are going so I am determined to make Pumpkins last
years good ones. But he still has plenty of life left in him..
I will miss Pumpkin as well, but will have many fond memories...
Do you listen to classical at all ?

There's ginger tom's for you.
Yes, I listen to some classical, but what a friend of mine, disparagingly, calls "council house classical" (might not translate ). I enjoy the gentle stuff; Mozart, Vivaldi, Richard Strauss, Bach and Telemann although a bit of uplifting opera also fits the bill at certain times

Sorry don't know the phrase..lol..but your taste is the staples
of every classical lover's library and are my favorites as well,
except for Strauss...I really like Teleman, a underrated baroque
composer.

I am not sure if the words "minimalist, slow and melancholy" really draw me in. That description, I am afraid, can be used for too many modern composers, and afraid isn't really my cup of tea. I'll seek out a sample and listen with open mind, but no guarantees

Vik
I just listened to Gorecki's 3rd Symphony this evening ..It is lush
and beautiful.Even though all 3 movements were Lento some how
the piece still seemed to move forward with a great intensity.
And The Polish National Symphony Orchestra do a great job,
and a nice piece of conducting by Antoni Wit.
Squash Thank you,I can see why you put him togther with
Arvo Part...I hear the similarities.
btw/ Vik I am sending you a email in 10 mins.

Thanks!! I'll come back with reviews. Might take me a couple of days to get there I've got more music than I can handle - and I've got a couple of other rather important things on my mind as well

Nightfly, Not sure I can get into this symphony. There is some intensity, but it doesn't seem to ever get anywhere. I don't feel it moving forward. It's incredibly frustrating.
I don't find it beautiful enough where I can just enjoy it, without needing some sort of a resolution.
