Top 100 Concertos - 10-31-2007, 02:29 AM

An Oz national public radio station has had listeners vote for 'the one concerto you couldn't live without'. It then compiled a list of the top 100 according to popularity and for the last few days has been playing them in order counting down from 100 until, tonight, there will be a live broadcast revealing the top 10.
I voted for the Tchaikovsky violin concerto and was shattered to find it came in at 18 .
They have done this with other classical music including the top 100 opera arias. The station then brings out a boxed set of all 100 pieces - a wonderful collection that includes many rarely heard (and difficult to obtain individually) arias.
Anyone want to have a shot at picking the top 3 concertos?
(Or even if the winner will be violin, piano or some other instrument.)
You have about 7 hours before the concert starts.
I will post a link with the full list tomorrow.

You've got to be kidding? Tchaikovsky's Violin concerto is uncontestable #1 for me. That's what I though of first when started reading your post, and then I read that it's #18. Sheer madness. Hmmm, so that leaves room for Tchaikovsky's 1st piano, Rachnmaninov's Second Piano and Brahms Violin for my top 3...

Mendelsohn, Sibellius, Bruch... all violin concertos. I'd put in top 10. As you see, I'm a tad biased

Do double concertos count? I'll stick in a Bach and Vivaldi double concertos in there for good measure they are pretty popular...

Squash,

Dare I say, your lab has a better tast in music?

ALL the top violin concertos are between 10 and 20.

I have long held dark suspicions about the Mozart claque. They are fanatical, well organized and likely to riot if their beloved Wolfie doesn't get the top spot.
Knowing what has already been eliminated, I pick Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major and/or his 5th Piano concerto for a top 3 finish.
Go the Emperor

The labrador voted for Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No 1 in B flat minor.
The cat ( a Russian Blue) has gone for Mozart's Clarinet Concerto in A major.
We shall see

I believe this to be total and comlete nonsense! Bruch, the top top of the violin concertos? Elgar at top 5? Surely, this is some sort of conspiracy. Un utterly ridiculous chart, with most of these not belonging on the chart at all. What is Philip Glass doing in ANY top 100 concertos???

Classic 100 Concerto: 1
Beethoven Piano Concerto No.5 in E flat Op.73 'Emperor'

Classic 100 Concerto: 2
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.2 in C minor Op.18

Classic 100 Concerto: 3
Beethoven Violin Concerto in D Op.61

Classic 100 Concerto: 4
Bruch Violin Concerto No.1 in G minor Op.26

Classic 100 Concerto: 5
Elgar Cello Concerto in E minor Op.85

Classic 100 Concerto: 6
Mozart Clarinet Concerto in A K622

Classic 100 Concerto: 7
Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez

Classic 100 Concerto: 8
Bach Concerto for 2 Violins in D minor BWV1043

Classic 100 Concerto: 9
Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No.1 in B flat minor Op.23

Classic 100 Concerto: 10
Rachmaninoff Piano Concerto No.3 in D minor Op.30

Bach's Double Violin Concerto

Rachnmaninov's Second Piano Concerto

Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto

These are 3 of my favorites and are also very popular.
I think they have a shot at the top 10.

I look forward to the list.

Thanks Squash

Edit:Hoping the Tchaikovsky rate higher this year

To replace the Tchaikovsky since it was 18th

I choose Beethoven's 5th Piano Concerto or Mozart's 20th Piano
2 more of my popular Favorites

and I know they would never pick Shostakovich Piano Concerto #1
also one of my favorites but didn't think it would make the list.

ps: I sent you a pm

LOL ...I have a cat(plain old domestic long hair) she loves
Mozart's Double Concerto for Harp and Flute (another one of my choices)

A big family favorite..It was my daughters birthing tape and is the only
classical piece my daughter will listen to all the way through,
until this very day(she is 21)..So there is something to be said about playing music in the womb. The cat will jump up on my lap close her eyes and purrr,
when this piece plays at least once a week in my home.
Also the cat and my daughter are very close...
Music is magical.
