Vagn Holmboe - 02-19-2008, 02:32 AM

Is anyone on this forum acquainted with the music of the Danish composer Vagn Holmboe? He was very prolific, and there is a LOT of his music available on eMusic and iTunes (and probably other music sites as well).

I remember reading about how great his symphonies are on some other forum a long long time ago, before classical music became affordable, back in the days when you actually had to BUY the CD!!!

No I never have heard of Vagn Holmboe but I will be checking him out
with some of my new downloads on eMusic.
Can you make a recommend on a specific symphony?

Thanks,

Nightfly,

According to Wikipedia, his output includes "thirteen symphonies, three chamber symphonies, four symphonies for strings, twenty string quartets, numerous concertos" among other works. I have never heard his music, so I can't give any recommendation on where to start. I am hoping that someone in this forum might have some acquaintance with his work and can give recommendations.

There is a reference to "Holmboe's most famous symphony" here

...but for the life of me I can't seem to determine which one it is that was on the program. Perhaps someone with better internet sleuthing skills can help.

Thanks!

Nightfly, or anyone else:

I did some sleuthing and was able to discover the so-called "most famous symphony" of Holmboe:

HERE

Right now I'm going through my chamber music phase, and will probably not be downloading any symphonies for a while. I'm planning to sample a few of his string quartets, however. If you or anyone else have time to check out this symphony, I would love to know what you think of it.

I have a suspicion that Holmboe is a composer whose music is not to be missed!

Thanks for the follow up links...
