Valentin Silvestrov is a Ukrainian composer of modern classical music. Even Arvo Part has described him as one of the greatest composers of his generation.
Personally, I don't care much for most of the so called "avante garde" contemporary classical music but will always check something out if it is recommended by a respected source. As a result, there are a number of Silvestro's works that I like, only one of which is available on Sparks.
It is the Requium Silvestro composed following the sudden and unexpected death of his wife, Larissa. Be warned, this is a dark and challenging musical experience, particularly the first three movements. However, it evolves into deeply moving, melodic and serene orchestral and choral music that seeks to persuade the listener that the pain of grief will eventually give way to peace and joyous memory of love lost.
Highly recommended (but I won't be surprised if it is not your cup of tea)
Cheers,
