Alaska In Winter - amazing - 11-15-2007, 04:11 PM

I've been listening to the hypnotic, gorgeous album by Alaska In Winter so much recently. If you like beautiful, dreamy, cinematic, orchestral indie then you should love this. If you don't, you'll still love this.

Thanks for the recommend,I like music to chill with
late at night.

Here is the link to their album Dance Party at The Balkens at Emusic:

Dance Party In The Balkans, MP3 Album Music Download at eMusic

I have sampled this and I'm not sure....what do you think?

Maybe I need to hear complete tracks to get complete vibe.

Hi Nightfly

Skyline have a five track promo single from this album. You can listen to the full tracks at http://skylive.fm . It's quite nice.

Thumbs up 11-15-2007, 10:40 PM

After listening to their MySpace, I think I will download the album from emusic (my monthly allowance kicked in again two days ago & there is still some left). Tracks I have listened to sound very similar to Beirut (not surprising as Zach Condon guests on half the tracks), but that is a good thing as I like Beirut . Thanks for the heads-up Mellifluous,
Cheers,
Dave C

Slight word of warning for anyone downloading this from emusic, the quality of the tracks is not particularly good (averages out at ~160 kbps (vbr)). This is the lowest I have every noticed from emusic, don't know why they have it so low. Album still sounds good through my computer, but the test will come when I get my headphones on,
Cheers,
Dave C

Thanks gm,

I will give this a listen ..

Edit: I found these 5 songs quite compelling..and I would have to say
yes I liked it after hearing full tracks...but not my usual listen.

Thanks again,

Nightfly

Well, I have given it two listens to now and can safely say that it is easily going to make it onto my top ten albums of the year. Absolutely love it ,

Interestingly, the download from Skyline shows the same low rate in Windows Media Player 10. Media Player Classic shows the actual bit rate ranging from 150-200. I wonder if this is an artefact of the encoding being set to a quality rather than a particular rate, and the music just isn't very complex? I don't know much about this stuff.

There seems to be a lot of Balkan-influenced pop around at the moment, so if you enjoy Beirut and Alaska In Winter, you might also get a kick out of Alec K Redfearn and the Eyesores, whose album The Blind Spot can be found here. the blind spot mp3 Perhaps even further out than AIW, with a hint of (late period) Philip Glass here and there, it's a great listen - enormously inventive and very ambitious. Try track 3 Myra for a taster. Just skip the last track, though.
