Black Crowes vs Nick Cave -
03-10-2008, 04:47 AM
I have just finished listening to two hugely anticipated new releases from two old rock warhorses - "Dig!!, Lazarus Dig!!" from Nick and "Warpaint" from The Black Crowes.
Local boy, Nick Cave's album was a big disappointment - the whole thing sounds like a sloppy Lou Reed wannabe. The song lyrics are generally good but the musical arrangement and production let them down big time. I loved his last album, "Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus" and I guess I was looking for something even better. Still, Nick has a habit of suddenly changing directions musically and I probably should not have been surprised and disappointed on this occasion. But I am - half a star
On the other hand, The Black Crowes have come roaring back after a long absence with a typical gutsy southern rock, bluesy rock (sweetened with a couple of slow ballads) classic that does not have a single weak track. Highly recommended - five stars.

Again, I don't know where to start. Dig!!, Lazarus Dig!! is an absolutely fantastic album; with the exception of Laura Marling's - Alas I Cannot Swim, the best one this year. I agree with squash that it is a bit of a change of direction, but that is just Nick Cave. On first listen I was impressed and very happy that he had not gone down the route of the Grinderman project and with each subsequent listen it has just got better and better. I do not think it is going to reach the heights of No More Shall We Part / Abattoir Blues - The Lyre Of Orpheus or The Boatman`s Call (but what album could ), but it is up there with some of his others (Henry's Dream, The Good Son, Murder Ballads..) and is better than others (From Her To Eternity, Tender Prey). We shall have to agree to disagree on this one and everyone out there, get it, you won't regret it ,
Cheers,
Dave C

I knew I'd hear from you Dave ..you are the one who turned me on to
Nick Cave to begin with, but maybe because I was tired when I listened to it
obviously... I didn't get it.But because you liked it so much and
I trust your judgment,I will give it another shot, when I am say in a livelier
mood..lol..

Because I am a big Nick Cave fan, I will probably give it another listen in a couple of weeks but I doubt I will be changing my opinion. I felt the same way about some of his other musical re-alignments. I respect the fact that he wants to explore new and/or different artistic territory, but on this occasion I just don't like the neighbourhood

Hi Squash,
Just out of interest, which of his two most popular albums Abattoir Blues & Boatman`s Call do you prefer? I am always surprised when I read review sites as they always seem to put Abattoir Blues as his best. I think I might be in a minority for preferring Boatman`s Call which I find difficult to believe, probably because it is in my top three fav. albums. Abattoir Blues is an excellent album, but I think I would place No More Shall We Part above it aswell,
Cheers,
Dave C

Nick Cave -
03-10-2008, 10:55 PM
Hello, I haven't logged in for sometime now but do look at the forum most days. The new Nick Cave album "Dig Lazarus Dig" is excellent. I wasn't a huge Nick Cave fan and didn't care for the Grinderman project. I previewed the new album on sparks not expecting much, boy was I wrong!!!! I liked it enough on the first listen to use some of my precious remaining balance to buy it (couldn't wait till it became avalible on another site). It's been playing all week at home and in the car and i'm liking it more and more. I'm a blues/bluesrock/rock/alternative music fan and this album just hit the right cord for me. 5 stars.
The Black crowes album is also very good, but didn't surprise me, it sounds like the Black Crowes are supposed to sound like. My mp3sparks account is down to $3.00 hoping for good news on their payment problems!!

Great song Solaris, but my cruel and tactless daughters long ago banned me from ALL singing along and I am pretty sure donning a pair of hotpants won't change their minds

Hi Dave,
I think Abattior Blues has the advantage because, as a double album, he was able to include a greater range of songs - from edgy, upbeat, in-your-face material to the slower, more contemplative bluesy stuff. However, I have rarely liked all the tracks on any of his albums and tend to create playlists of all of the stuff that I do like. On such a playlist there would be proportionally a bit more from 'No More...' and 'Boatmans...' than from 'Abattior...' But nothing, so far, from 'Dig!!'
Regards,
Squash
