Martha Wainwright - I Know You're Married But I've Got Feelings Too - 05-17-2008, 07:16 PM

Are there any fellow Martha lovers on here?

For the record, ever since 2005 she's been my favourite musician, so I was all excited to learn of her new album (now available on MemphisMembers!)

It doesn't disappoint. Not released in the US yet, but every British press review I've seen have given it at least 4 stars, yay.

All the Wainwrights are enormously popular in Oz and Martha will tour here for the third time later this year. This album was released here on 10 May and the reviews have been mostly positive. The CD released in Oz contains a bonus track cover of the Eurythmics "Love is a Stranger" (a hook for those stuck in the 80's) which is not on the Sparks listing.

Great second album and well worth a listen.

Cheers,

Squash

Thanks, Squash - even though I'm not much of an 80's buff, I still went ahead and downloaded this album and "Love Is A Stranger" really is good

You have a PM, Mel (In an exchange for an explanation of this sentence/comment from a little while back - which really has been bothering me: http://www.aom3.org/forum/31985-post3.html )

You could have jumped in then and there and explained what you meant. To me, it looks fairly obvious what you meant (ironic posts tend to not have smilies in them!, but sometimes people jump the shark on a post's meaning - especially if they're very well learned in English but foreign nevertheless. Whenever I make a post in any forum, I usually check sometime after posting it just to see its reception.

99.9% of the times* I read something in English, German, French, Norwegian, Swedish or my own language, I can tell/distinct/pinpoint the irony or sarcasm - but martinman's post really made me think that he (maybe) was taking a dump on our forum by thanking us for the auto generated "We miss you"-mails, we always ship out after a period of inactivity by forum members.

Therefore I asked what you guys (the key forum members) thought of his post - I never said or wrote anything degrading about him

*Is it times (plural) or time (singular)?

Awesome, thanks for the PM. Really like that cover!

As for that topic, Martinman seemed in such a foul mood, I was trying to diplomatically put things into perspective for him. Personally, I saw no ambiguity in his post, but you seemed to. That's what I meant by jumping the shark, i.e. not sure to accept it at face value. Other native-English speakers seemed to too, though, so it's no disrespect intended to you 100% of the time you're actually a better English speaker/writer than a lot of British people I come across I didn't mean to imply you wrote anything degrading. You didn't.

*Both are probably correct But "99% of the time" seems more common from what I hear.

It's 'time' not 'times'.

Your identification of some of the nuances of English is better than some people I know who have never spoken anything else.

I don't remember the whole thread to be able to put the specified post in context but my impression was Martinman was being making a somewhat melodramatic exit. It was more about him than you.

However, Mel's reference to 'jumping the shark" has me completely flummoxed - we know a thing or two about sharks in Oz, but jumping the buggers, if you are in the water with them, would be bloody difficult.

Cheers,

Squash

Fill the shark full of lead and forget it

I realised jumping the gun is more what I intended.

Jump the shark is an expression though. Have you not heard it?
