To: Nightfly, talk us about music, please... -
05-29-2007, 06:38 PM
I don't know if this is the right Music Talk's forum, but I'd like to thanks Nightfly for this comments about all kind of music. It's really interesting. And his knowledege is remarkable.
So... this is an open and public question for you, Nightfly. Do you know a "group" called Eels? If you have listened, what do you think about them (well, about him, because is basically A Man Called E)?
Thanks!
Kalvin

Sorry Kalvin...I know of the Eels..really a guy named Mark Everet..who writes
really dark catchy pop tunes..but I' m not really a fan..I heard their first album Beautiful Freak...It's too dark for me...but I can understand its merits
and why you like it..I will be writing more reviews.. .but unfortunately I am older than many of you and I am just sharing my years of musical background with you, to turn you on to the roots of the music you listen to...That doesn't mean I don't know new stuff..not as well as you guys do...I want to learn from you guys the more contemporary stuff you think I would like ,to make be better rounded musically..My daughter helps me out with hip hop and dance..lol...I just made her a Notorious B.I.G. Collection of our favorite songs for instance..
But thanks Kalvin for your interest ,and you can ask me any question any time.and yes this the right forum ..and let us know what you are listening to and why and where we can find it.
Thanks,
Nightfly

Well, I don't know how old are you, but I'm not so young... I grew up with the music of the 80's, Dire Straits, Alan Parsons Project, Marillion... But I try to know new groups and singers, and I don't mind ages, genres...
Talking about Eels, maybe his albums are dark (due to his familiar circumstances), but try his last one: "Blinking Lights and Other Revelations". It isn`t as dark as his previous, and maybe it's his masterpiece. He says that this album is about "God and all the questions related to the subject of God". "Daisies of the Galaxy" is probably my favorite, it's about losing the childhood and the innocence.
But I think, that the only way of understanding contemprary music is listening the "sources", the "roots", people like Howlin' Wolf (that you mentioned in another post), or Robert Johnson, Elmore James, Muddy Waters (well, I'm talking about blues, and this is the Rock/Indie forum; sorry!)...Bob Dylan, Velvet Underground...
Thanks to you, I will follow your comments and recomendations.
Kalvin
P.S.: By the way, now I'm listening Sheryl Crow...

Yes Kalvin you definitely get it...I grew up with the music of the late 50's,60's and 70's.
and never stopped..I will check out Blinking Lights..sounds like my kind of album.. and the Blues artists you mentioned are in my blood, being a Blues musician for many years as well as playing jazz/fusion for 3 or more ..you can talk about any kind of music in any genre forum ..this is what we were hoping for a cross pollination of musical tastes..where we can all learn and share with each other and show musical tolerance and broaden all of our horizons..
What better way to get to know each other...My next genre will be Latin
and then a thing on Jazz/Fusion then Muddy Waters and ..extc..extc..sounds like you have some good ideas and a good broad spectrum of musical knowledge.. hope you share them here in these forums...
Thanks for your feedback,
Nightfly

My wife usually tells me that I would be happier if I was bon ten years before, because I really love 70's music: from Led Zeppelin to Neil Young, Allman Brothers Band, Creedence...

This morning, going to work, we were listening Kenny Wayne Sepherd's last album "10 Days Out (Blues From The Backroads)". I recently discovered him.

Thanks to you. I try to keep my mind open to any musical genre and artist, without any prejudice.
By the way, if you want to taste some flamenco/blues fussion, I recommend you Raimundo Amador (specially an album called "Noche de flamenco y blues"), he plays with B.B. King (seems they're good friends). Unfortunatelly, this album isn't at the Allofmp3 catalogue.
Kalvin
P.S.: As yos probably have noted, I'm spanish, and I only have three years of english language, many many years ago... so excuses for my bad english

Hi Kalvin.
Wow - if you only have three years of English studies behind you, then you must have a real talent for different languages. I think your English is really good.

Hey Kalvin...First of all your English is excellent and if I didn't know you from Barcelona it would be totally transparent to me..You are more articulate
than may people I know from the States ... Yes,Kenny Wayne Sheperd and Johnny Lang are 2 young new guitar slingers that play really well...I will check out Raimundo Amador ...have you listened to Rodrigo and Gabriela great modern Flamenco players very percussive and exciting interplay..
My next reviews will be Latin music from NY ..I was
brought up in the South Bronx and this is the music I grew up with though I am not Latino, I have a great love for this music..Such as..Willie Colon,Ruben Blades,Pancho Sanchez,Eddie Palmerleri,Tito Puente,Cal Tjader extc..Salsa is
old school but this music is timeless and latin/jazz is still very popular
around the world..
Thanks,
Nightfly

The Jimmy Bowskill Band -
05-31-2007, 12:04 AM
Hello, If you like Kenny Wayne Shepard or Jonny Lang check out the next great kid blues guitarist!! His name is Jimmy Bowskill . I seen him playing in a small bar in Whistler on May 19th, extrodinary talent, rocked the house down!!!! Here's a quote from is web page
" One of the most spectacular performances (at Ukraine’s Koktebel Jazz & Blues Festival) was by the 14-year-old Canadian boy wonder Jimmy Bowskill and his band. The opening chords showed that the boy is not simply a wunderkind but an exceptionally brilliant phenomenon in the world of Blues and Rock. His incredible guitar technique and his strong free-flowing vocal skills, along with his volcanic temperament, blew the audience away. -The Koktebel Resistance, UKRAINE "

Also worth checking out, new Tommy Castro "Painkiller"
and Albert Cummings "True to Yourself"

As you pointed out there are many young players out there playing the Blues
It's good to see that it will be passed on..does Jimmy Bowskill have an album?
I downloaded your recommends
Tommy Castro's new one can be found on Emusic ..I like his
aggressive playing here and his R&B tinge on " Painkiller"
Albert Cummings like Tommy Castro is on Blind Pig Records and has a aggressive straight on approach that I really like... on "True to Yourself" he works with Tommy Shannon from Stevie Ray Vaughn's Double Trouble
this one can also be found on Emusic ..
Thanks for the recommends of some contemporary blues guys and letting us all know that the Blues is alive and well..
