I like the Spoons as well but I perfered Ga,GA,GA,GA

Gonna check out this Brent Cash fellow...sounds right up my alley.

Thank to all above for your recommends...

The Shins are a good band and there's a definite 60's pop sensibility going on there....probably where the Beach Boy comparisons are coming from.

I can't help thinking that reviewers too often reach for the Brian Wilson comparisons as soon as they hear a few vocal harmonies. Fact is, there's a whole lot more to Mr Wilson's art than that - especially the post-Pet Sounds/Smile stuff. I'm no muso, but we're talking some pretty complex chord progressions here which, with the best will in the world, is way beyond the scope of most bands. And then there's the whole orchestration thing. . . .

The word genius is often over used in music, but not in the case
of Brian Wilson. What beautiful music he made.

shins, etc. - 08-11-2008, 09:15 PM

I haven't heard of Brent Cash... Is he the same guy P4k reviewed a week or so ago?

I love the Beach Boys/Brian Wilson... just downloaded brother Dennis Wilson's "Pacific Ocean Blue," but I just can't get into the Shins. There is no more eager lover of melody than me, but I just don't think the Shins' are any good. They're too... random. They don't make sense to me.

If you crave melody and harmony, McBizz, allow me to direct you to Louis Philippe. No one does it better (not even BW himself anymore) yet he's one of music's best kept secrets. Try starting with his 1994 album Sunshine, or his orchestral masterpiece Azure from 98. If all else fails, you can find them both on eMusic or hear lengthy samples at Welcome to Sunshine - The Louis Philippe Web Site. Believe me, it's ravishing stuff . . .

Ooo rock me Amadeus
Rock me Amadeus...
Rock rock rock rock me Amadeus
Rock me all the time to the top

Er war ein Punker
Und er lebte in der großen Stadt
Es war Wien, war Vienna
Wo er alles tat
Er hatte Schulden denn er trank
Doch ihn liebten alle Frauen
Und jede rief:
Come on and rock me Amadeus

Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, Amadeus
Amadeus Amadeus, oh oh oh Amadeus
