ramones help please - 03-03-2008, 05:06 PM

Hi guys, I'm trying to expand my musical back catalogue and often thought about the ramones. I often see kids half my age wearing that famous black t-shirt and wounder if I'm missing out? I've never heard any of their stuff and with dozens of studio, live and compilation albums on alltunes I have no idea where to start. Do you guys have any advice? what's their best studio album? is there an adequete compilation covering their extensive back catalogue?

Many thanks

Yes the Ramones were a great punk band that filtered in the
elements of classic pop music..Start with "Rocket Ship To Russia"
if you don't like that album, you won't like the Ramones. Then there first
The Ramones and then Road To Ruin...."Ramones Live" a concert in England
is a very good representitive of the band.

They were a great band that were just meant for having fun..
how many bands could say that

Ramones ... ah, definitive American punk. An enduring legacy full of undisputed classics. Hope that you enjoy their music.

Nightfly: your bakyard, I guess. Yours is a nice summary.

I would add, to Nightfly's recommendations, "Loco Live" a concert recorded in Barcelona. This record is also representative of their music.

Enjoy them. I'm pretty sure you won't be disappointed by Ramones.

Thanks for your help guys. I have down loaded 'rocket ship' and heard about half, so far so good. I'm in the middle of writing my dissertation, making criticaly appraising a difficult task at the mo, but rest assured, come hand in day, I'll crank up the stereo and report back!

one chord wonders? - 03-27-2008, 01:00 AM

I recall the music press of the time viewed the ramones as the status quo of punk. Once you've heard a couple of tracks you've heard the whole repertoire! For me this is a cul de sac - I hate it when a band produces an interesting album then follows up with more of the same. But not many seem able to avoid it (pink floyd, one of the few, were genuinely progressive - they actually changed their music).

The Ramones weren't trying to change the world, just bringing fun rock and roll to the people...maybe not the most creative thing, but something that
music could use a lot more of.

They were classic punkers, and you knew what you were gonna get. Classic songs like Blitzkrieg bop, Rockaway Beach, Teenage Lobotomy, I Wanna be Sedated, and of course...The KKK Took My Baby Away / My Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes To Bitburg). See if you can get the "Hey Ho, Let's Go" anthology. It has like 55 songs, (because the Ramones hardly ever wrote a song that was more than 3 mins. long!)

Also you might want to check out The Pixies (Boston punk) or X (L.A. punk), if you like the Ramones.
