After her recommendation I became a big fan of theirs, I have nearly all their albums on CD. My favourites are "Roaring Days" and "The Big Don`t Argue". Not sure how big they were in Aus. but they deserved a lot more recognition. I was lucky enough to see them live in London twice back in the mid 90`s. They were superb live. It`s a shame a lot more Aussie bands don`t get success here in the UK.
Hi Starcat'
WPA were well known in Oz, particularly in their home state, Victoria.

One of the things I really like about Alltunes/Sparks is the full length previews. This allows me to spend hours just browsing looking for something new - often from outside the dominant USA and British music scene.

This forum has also been a great place to find new music. I have discovered some fabulous stuff from Scandanavia, Germany, Spain, Italy, Canada etc which would never get air-play in Oz.

Maybe we could start a thread - "Bands from Your Country That Never Made The Big Time - But Should Have".

Other Oz bands you may not have heard much about but could be of interest are Savage Garden, The Whitlams, Men At Work, Hoodoo Gurus, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Augie March, Grinspoon and Eskimo Joe.

My latest "discovery" is in fact a Brit band which I understand is big in the modern folk scene in the UK but I had never heard. It's called Show of Hands and they recently released a 'best of' 2CD set that I just love. Highly recommended.

Savage Garden was HUGE in the the late nineties here in Europe

And Men At Work had 3-4 big hits here in the early 80's

Hi Squash

Thanks for the recommendations.

I have some Men At Work, Savage Garden & Hoodoo Gurus on CD, but I will check out the others.

Will also have a listen to Show Of Hands - quite partial to a bit of folk myself

I should have also mentioned an indigenous rock band, Yothu Yindi. They fuse traditional aboriginal instuments and music with rock music and western instruments. They frequently appeared at gigs with Midnight Oil and I am sure one of their albums is on Alltunes/Sparks. Their biggest hit in Oz was a song called "Treaty".

And I would be remisss not to mention somewhere in this thread the one Oz band that can sell out Carnegie Hall with tickets being scalped for $600 - the WIGGLES of course

I just heard an excellent new (to me) folk band called Espers. They sound like a modern version of Pentangle - very English . . . but they're American. You might like to check them out.

Other members of the Squash household (that are more into Boy Bands than I) have rather forcefully pointed out that Savage Garden were No. 1 in the USA about the same time as they were HUGE in Europe
