Recommendations needed (Vol. 2) -
01-18-2008, 11:38 PM
Up to now I've been mainly into old music - bands and artists such as Santana, Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, The Doors, Neil Young, Tom Petty, Peter Green and JJ Cale. I can also appreciate jazzy stuff like St Germain and The Crusaders and funky people like James Brown and Fela Kuti. Trouble is, I'm finding it harder and harder to find something new to listen to - although by new, I don't necessarily mean "new". Not very long ago I heard Electric Music for Mind & Body by Country Joe and the Fish for the first time. I'd always dismissed him because of that Vietnam singalong at Woodstock, but there are some great bits of psychedelia among the more dated stuff on that album. Slightly more towards the present, I also like Paul Weller, Beck, Kasabian and Radiohead - but a lot of new bands leave me cold.
Bearing in mind the types of music I've described, I'd very much like some new names of explore. Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Hi Gaucho,
You might like some of the older Oz bands that were very good but didn't get a lot of air play outside Oz and NZ. Check out:
Midnight Oil (partic "10,9,8...")
Little River Band
Cold Chisel (try "East")
Skyhooks ("Living in the Seventies")
John Farnham ("Age of Reason")
Regards,
Squash

Thanks for the suggestions, Squash. Little River Band and Midnight Oil were quite big over here but I'll give them all a listen.
If anyone knows any other stuff I might like - new or old - I'd be happy to check it out.

Pandora was an excellent way of hearing new music but, sadly, that's now been taken away (from the UK)

They seem to be having "unexpected technical difficulties." I'll try lastfm, although I don't think they're as specific as Pandora.
Mind you, I once told Pandora I liked the soft rock band America and the first song they played me was Old Durham Town by Roger Whittaker! I was really insulted!

Hi Squash
A few years back, an Aussie friend of mine introduced me to many fine bands from Down Under that I had not heard before.
I was particularly impressed with Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel, The Black Sorrows and especially Weddings Parties Anything. After her recommendation I became a big fan of theirs, I have nearly all their albums on CD. My favourites are "Roaring Days" and "The Big Don`t Argue". Not sure how big they were in Aus. but they deserved a lot more recognition. I was lucky enough to see them live in London twice back in the mid 90`s. They were superb live. It`s a shame a lot more Aussie bands don`t get success here in the UK.
