Ry Cooder - I, Flathead - 07-15-2008, 06:24 AM

I rate Ry Cooder as one of the finest musicians to come out of America. His early albums (Boomer's Story, Into the Purple Vally, Paradise and Lunch, Bop Till You Drop, in particular) are probably the most worn vinyl in my collection.

His new album (the third in his so called 'California Trilogy') elicits memories of these earlier masterpieces -quirky, humorous songs and fantastic musicianship

I have read there is a novel that comes with the CD that narates the story behind each of the songs. However, I have just DL'd it from Sparks and the music is that good I think I can live without the book

Highly recommended.

Cheers,

Squash

Hi Tencircles

My preference leans towards his interpretations of American 'roots' music. However, I also enjoy his collaborations with other musicians such as Ali Farke Toure and his Cuban period. I am listening to the track 'Amandrai' off the Talking Timbuktu CD as I type this. Nine and a half minutes of truly amazing music

Cheers,

Squash

P.S. Have listened to I,Flathead a few more times since my original post and find a couple of the tracks a little tedious. Probably downgrade my assessment to four stars - still well worth a listen though
