Thanks klaatu for the Inna Zhelannaya tip (I saw her come up a lot in searches doing collaborations with Mari Boine!), I found her by looking up Farlanders, and me likes. A lot.

I am currently really enjoying the new Morley album, 'Seen'. The ballad "No Evidence" is a beatifully crafted song. If you havn't heard her she is a bit Norah Jones/Katie Melua in style.

"One Cell In The Sea" by A Fine Frenzy. A Fine Frenzy is singer songwriter Alison Sudol from Seattle. If the title 'singer songwriter' puts you off (there have been so many in the last 12 months) please don't let it. Alison's music is vocally fantastic with beautiful orchestral backing the songs are varied and lovely.

At the end of the day 'female singers' may not be your bag, but if you've got an open mind please give these two an audition.

I listened to Frenzy on AllTunes, liked and downloaded her off Soundsbox. I'll have to listen to the whole album on my iPod. I like her sound. Thanks, Hirs Ute.

Here's another Swedish band with a great female vocalist who really blew me away this year - The Tiny. Probably another acquired taste - Ellekari's voice is one of those that'll either send shivers up your spine or send you screaming for the exit. A bit like Bjork or Joanna Newsom. Mari Boine's Iddjaggas (sp?) was one of my faves of 2006, but I never saw it reviewed anywhere in the UK
