Two unusual recommendations - 01-23-2008, 09:05 PM

Hi all, I'd like to share two 'discoveries' with you (well discoveries for me at least ). To my mind they are both beautiful albums although no doubt some will disagree:

"The Bairns" by Rachel Unthank & the Winterset is an incredibly haunting album. It is at the same time original, unusual and traditional, at times mixing mixing contemporary themes with Northumbrian (NE England) dialect.
The bairns is available from Sounsbox & Sparks (ha!) and maybe others.

The second is:

"One Cell In The Sea" by A Fine Frenzy. A Fine Frenzy is singer songwriter Alison Sudol from Seattle. If the title 'singer songwriter' puts you off (there have been so many in the last 12 months) please don't let it. Alison's music is vocally fantastic with beautiful orchestral backing the songs are varied and lovely.
I got "One Cell In The Sea" from MP3Sale, but maybe others have it too.

At the end of the day 'female singers' may not be your bag, but if you've got an open mind please give these two an audition.

Hi Hirs Ute,
Good recommendations. I have already got Rachel Unthank's album and it is great. Never heard of A Fine Frenzy but just pulled it down from mp3fiesta (started from MM but gave up when I saw it would take 47 minutes to download the first track). Sounds good,
Cheers,
Dave C

I'm pulling my hair out at the moment. I was messing about on last.fm at work today and came across an excellent band which had a three letter name. I found them by linking from a band '3 daft monkeys', but I have been trying to repeat the process for the past hour and just can not do it. Guess I'll have to wait for tomorrow and dig them out of the history.
NB. Really like the Fine Frenzy album and I am barely half way through it
Cheers,
Dave C
[EDIT] Found it Bands call Low and have been around for ages (anyone heard of them?). Downloading an album call 'Things we lost in the fire' at the moment.

Flattered you like Fine Frenzy

What the hell, AllTunes is working for me (and hopefully everyone else) so "The Great Destroyer" by Low is in the queue

Snap. That is what I used to test out alltunes. Will give it a listen after I have finished with Things we lost in the fire (sounds good, but will need a few listens to really grow on me I think),
Cheers,
Dave C

Already got this, great to see someone else likes it!

"Almost Lover" strikes a chord with me.

*sobs*

Edit: checking out Rachel Unthank, me likes. Thanks for the recommendation!

Edit 2: Do you like Marissa Nadler or Abigail Washburn? You should check them out.

Hi Hirs,

"Female singers" are definitely my bag and I like 'A Fine Frenzy'. Thanks for the recommend. Had a quick listen to the Unthank album and at first thought it may not be for me. However I have decided I really need to give it a more careful appraisal and will go back to it when I have more time.

Other female singers I like that you might be interested in include:

Feist - particularly the albums 'Let it Die' and 'The Reminder'
Loreena McKennit - 'An Ancient 'Muse'
Sissel - 'All Good Things' and 'Into Paradise'

And for something a little different, check out Marianne Antonsen's album 'Blomster I Soweto' ( I got it from eMusic).

Squash
