Thumbs up Al Green-Lay It Down - 05-31-2008, 02:53 AM

If you like Al Green and old school Soul you will love this album.
Green's old formula of sparse music, organ, guitar and a occasional
funky horn progression dominates the album. The guitar player on this
album is superb, playing all these nice little soul fillers and riffs and
taking a occasional solo.Green is in fine voice and he does duets
with Corrine Baily,John Legend, extc and they never get in his way,
its Green's show all the way.

Highly recommended for all fans of Soul music.

I love the old Al Green stuff he did with Willie Mitchell - the chugging beats and organ sound. Have you heard the track Beware? Eight minutes of magic.
Some of his more recent releases I've found disappointing because slick production doesn't seem to serve him well. I'll give the latest one a listen, though.
Ann Peebles was also produced by Willie Mitchell and some of her stuff is brilliant.

Missed this post initially - good to know the Rev's new CD is good, I'll be getting it later today. Al Green played the Paramount here 2 years ago, a 1500 seat venue. I went to buy tix like 3 days after it went on sale, and they were sold out! Hope he tours here with this new release, I'll be ready this time.

He also has a great biography, the scalding water story gives me the creeps !

I think you'll be pleasantly surprized...not over produced.

I remember that scalding water story when it happened,I think it was from a really mad lover, and it turned him back to God and away from the ladies.
