Gnarls - 04-13-2008, 09:16 PM

Did anyone see Gnarls Barkley on SNL last night? Just watching it on Tivo, and I am impressed. I thought it was just basically 2 guys with studio musicians, but they had a full band - 2 keys, bass, guitar, traps and all very funky and "proficient". I really dug the song they did, which I have no clue what it is other than something off their new release. I always passed them off as gimicky, now I'm a fan. The singer (is he Gnarls?) was smooth and downtown, sort of like funky version of the Rev. Al Green -- a 5'8'' 300 lb. version. I definately want to catch them on this tour.

I loved their first album - but the latest leaves something to be desired. He does have a fantastic voice, doesn't he?

He sure does. I'm not familiar with them other than the "I remember when, I remember when I lost my mind" song. I liked the bassist, she (or he, I couldn't really tell) was quite good.

I must admit I like "The Odd Couple"

The next point should probably go on the 'Music Trivia' thread but I read that 'The Odd Couple' had the same producer as the The Black Keys album "Attack and Release"

I bought the album upon release. I am very impressed with Cee Lo and Danger Mouse's latest work.

BTW, Gnarls Barkley is just a name that Cee Lo and Danger Mouse came up with, it is not a member of the band.

I liked the sound/beats of the first album, but it seemed to be a little random at times. However the 'Odd Couple' is well produced and probably one of the best albums I've heard in a while all the way through.

It starts out with an OUTKAST feel to it with charity case, has an electronic (vik doesn't like that) synthesized sound (keyboards) in many of the songs but sounds reminiscent of 60's and 70's funk/rock. She knows reminds me a little of a modern Van Morrison feel to it. Blind Mary reminds me of the Mamas and Papas. The background singers in Charity Case remind me of Bob Marley's back-up singers. Blind Mary is a fun carnival sounding anthem...but very fun.

About the trivia, I'm not sure if Danger Mouse produced the Black Keys album, but I do know that as long as Danger Mouse is alive, no one else will produce the group Gnarls.

This album is just an amazing find.
