Smile #5000 (Two Useful Tips To Speed Up Your PC) - 02-12-2008, 09:32 PM

I thought long and hard (well at least a full five minutes) what my 5000th post should be about and I decided to give you guys two useful tips to speed up things on your PC (sorry Mac users )

Too bad not all forum members will benefit from both these tips but many will, so here we go:

1. This is a GREAT tip if you have a PC with Windows installed and you have a few (or several) folders containing either many or large files (or both):

On my PC I have a root folder called "Music" and a sub folder for each of the letters from "A" to "Z" (plus one for "The"). All artists starting with the letter "A" I have placed in the (you guessed it ) "A" folder and so on.

Almost all of these sub folders are HUGE. My "M" folder contains almost 4,000 files (all chart hits, mind you - no fillers ).

Opening such a massive folder could take 5-10 seconds, which as you guys know is irritating beyond belief.

Then I stumbled upon this neat trick on the Internet:

Double (left) click on My Computer.

Left click on Tools.

Left click Folder Options.

Left click the View tab.

Uncheck Automatically Search For Network Printers.

Left click Apply.

Left click OK.

Done
.

Note: If you have a use for the Automatically Search For Network Printers function, then you can always recheck the box again.

2. This is a GREAT tip if you have the Firefox browser installed:

I have 4 Gb of RAM installed on my PC but even if I have such a fair amount of memory, I experienced that Firefox would just stall, if I had more than 12-14 tabs open at once.

I had noticed in the lower left corner of my PC (on the system bar) that each tab was sending information to Google Analytics. I then used (you guessed it ) Google to search for a solution - and I found it almost immediately:

A Firefox Extension called CustomizeGoogle: CustomizeGoogle: Improve Your Google Experience -- Firefox Extension

Install that extension and restart Firefox.

Left click on Tools.

Select Extensions.

Left click Options.

Select Privacy and check the two boxes.

Left click OK.

Restart Firefox.

Done
.

Note: You can even choose to remove Google ads etc. using this extension

Now I can have 30-40 tabs open without slowing down my browser or my computer one single bit

Enjoy

Solaris, Congratulations on 5,000 not out.

5,000 posts of which the majority were selfless support, direction and encouragement to other forum members. Your 5,000 post helps to highlight that

The ones concerning Katie Price and Peter Andre are probably forgotten as quickly as possible though

Anyone taking bets as to when Sloaris will hit 10,000 I’ll start the betting with 17th November 2008

My alternate choice of a 5000th post would have been providing my fellow forum members with a link to a home made pr0n movie of Katie Price and Peter André - but I reconsidered and kept that link to myself

Note: The pr0n movie was not home made by me - bugger

Congrats on an excellent 5,000. I tried to make sense of this post but yet again, it has gone over my head . Not going to worry too much though as I rarely get above having more than two tabs open in firefox (I get confused and slow down faster than the computer). Here's to the next 5,000 (Mid august I reckon),
Cheers,
Dave C

CONGRATULATIONS Solaris.
Very impressive 5000th post. Very subtle way to show us how big your hard drive is without using pics (pretty impressive memory too)

All the best,

Squash

Dreamy, you have no idea how many PMs between Hirs Ute and myself took to arrive at the post above (I call it "Operation Dreamy 5000"). In fact I was his designated person to congratulate you just in case he wasn't around. I had a draft of that message since morning In fact I wanted to post the whole PM exchange - because in it I think it shows more about how much we here like you - but I've been forbidden (I think )

Anyway -- you are the dreamiest moderator in this forum , and a good friend.

However, to demonstrate your superior moderating privileges, you should change my status from "Senior Member" to "Princess" officially!

CONGRATS!!!
