Question Alternatives to itunes - 04-29-2008, 10:59 PM

After losing one third of my albums & all of my playlists I have finally lost my patience with itunes . So, does anyone know of a good free-to-download alternative. I want something where I can have the equivalent of itunes 'top-rated' playlist and which allows you to easily find 'recently added albums' on your ipod. Luckily I backed up all my music Yesterday, so I am keen to uninstall itunes & get on with an alternative.
Forgot, one other thing which I would like is for the alternative to be compatible with last.fm (but I guess that might be asking a bit much),
Cheers,
Dave C

hi dave c,

im in the same boat as you are. i hate itunes. i run it on windows xp and i seem to have all sorts of problems with it. it takes for ever to load the software and it freezes all the time. plus half the time it will not even recognize my ipod when i plug it in.

before i bought my new ipod(60 gig) i used and old 20 gig 2nd generation. i used music match software with that model and it was splendid. i never had trouble with the software and it was really easy to manage. i tired to use music match with the new ipod and i had zero luck.

guess im not much help just thought i would let you know that i did like music match. it still might work though. i was running music match on a windows 2000 pro machine and the new upgrade software needs to be ran on windows xp or vista, so maybe music match will work. ill look into it.

thanks,

cr

Shadman

Typed in "itunes alternatives" in Google and came up with thousands of pages. Throw in "Last.fm" into the search and your results get even better.

Here's one example :-

10 Alternatives to iTunes for managing your iPod - Simplehelp

It mentions whether provides Last.FM integration. I know it is important to you (as is to me!) Can't manage my Monday morning without checking the newly updated weekly chart. Feel like a kid on Christmas morning. It's like suddenly temporary amnesia ensues, and I get all excited to find out what it is I've been listening to all week. lol

Agree with you, think last.fm is excellent (never would have guess that Kimya Dawson was my most listened to artist last week (thanks Shadman / hirs)). MediaMonkey has got it's own plugin for last.fm so I am going to try this first & see how it goes (670 albums transferred across so far). I was getting annoyed with itunes aswell as lots of times my play count did not transfer over to last.fm, very annoying. Not sure if I am going to have too uninstall itunes before I try to use it first; guess I will find out when I plug my ipod in.
Cheers,
Dave C

You might want to disable the itunes "scrobbling" so you don't end up double counting. Just imagine how excited Hirs Ute and Shadman would get if they saw your Kimya Dawson play count doubled?

P.S. Who is Kimya Dawson?
