I hate to see people pay for something they can get for free:

Exact Audio Copy (EAC) for ripping audio CDs
RazorLame for converting WAVs to MP3s
MP3TAG for tagging your MP3s
feurio! for burning those MP3s as your own awesome CD mixes
WinAmp for listening to music on your PC or managing music on your portable devices, such as the iPod

Every commercial package pales in comparison to the free software packages listed above. And absolutely NOTHING can burn a CD the way feurio! can.

Don't throw your money away!

Mp3J,

Thanks for this great list you provided for us all.
I know that I can use 1 or 2 of them myself and always
wanted to try Feurio..everybody raves about it.And I love
Winamp been a user for many years

Will razorlame also convert Mp3's to wave for devices that
don't take mp3?

Once again thanks and a happy new year,

Nightfly

Hi MP3junk1E

Although that isn't the exact set of software I use myself, I totally agree with you that people needn't spend money on tools and utilities - and not just in the realm of music. For most people's needs, there's free software out there to do just about everything.

Hi GM,
The labrador gave me a digital SLR for Christmas which allows me to shoot uncompressed RAW files.
Any recommendations for a Photoshop substitute?
Thanks,
Squash

Hi Squash54

The Gimp http://www.gimp.org/ is the free image editing software of choice, but it doesn't support RAW natively, so check out the UFRaw plugin http://ufraw.sourceforge.net/ . The RAW format is manufacturer-specific, so make sure that your camera is on the list that UFRaw supports. There's a video on using UFRaw here http://meetthegimp.org/podpress_trac...thegimp011.mp4

Freeware and donationware tend to be less polished and less well documented than expensive commercial equivalents, but you should be able to resolve any problems with the help of Google.

Thanks GM - I will check out The Gimp (love the name). RAW format should not be a problem as the camera has two options here, including Adobe's.

There has been a wild surf running today and I have just spent the last couple of hours getting some great shots to practice with.

All the best,

Squash

My car cd player does not play thr mp3 format.
Great deal now of my music is in mp3. only,
so it must be converted to wav.audio format to be played in the car.
Yes I know this is not ideal sound wise, but in this case it is out of necessity.
And I really don't care as long as it sounds decent...
I am no longer a audiophile...Just a music listener and lover...if it sounds good to me..that's good enough.

If there is anybody out there who knows a free program
Mp3junkie? Mp3 to Wav that and can transfer file Info.

I am using iTunes now for conversion but iTunes as you know
is not my favorite app. and is very bloated for just this purpose.

Hi Nightfly

If your computer came bundled with something like Nero or Roxio, they will burn audio CDs from mp3s. Express Burn from NCH http://www.nch.com.au/burn/burnsetup.exe is small and free and will do the job too.
