This petite time saver you can find on many a site on the Internet:

If your Windows installation is in a terrible state (too many application installs and uninstalls, weird application crashes at weird times, file associations that don't work anymore, etc):

Instead of wiping and re-installing Windows - just do this:

1. Back up all your files
2. Log on as a different user on the machine (maybe you should create one first?)
3. Delete your "old" user profile (in Computer Properties, Advanced Settings)
4. Log into your "old" user account again
5. All your files will be gone (you did back them up, didn't you?) but you will have a clean registry - and as far as all applications are concerned, you are a new user.
6. Restore your files

This should apparently work on Mac operating systems too

Be aware that you'll also need to reinstall many, if not all programs (that would be the same if you reinstalled Windows, of course, but it means you need to do more than just restore your files...

You're right, koenfucius - but still you save the time that you would have had to use to first format the hard drive and then reinstall the whole operating system

The easiest thing would probably be to make a ghosted CD of your operating system at a time, when everything is functioning like THE BOMB But even then, it would still be necessary to make continuous back up of all your new documents, mp3-files, mpeg-files etc. on an external device


P.S. I'm also glad that you're still lurking around (but I already knew that, because I have access to other parts of this forum )
