How to transfer your rated tunes to a new computer: -
Old computer:-
make 5 playlists, one for each number of "stars"
export those 5 playlists (xml files)

New computer:-
import the 5 playlists into itunes
give all the songs in each of those playlists the corresponding number of stars using select all + command.

Job done

Cool. I guess that meets your needs. Glad it worked out for you! I'd be lost without playcounts, last-played date, added added, etc.

Another method that works, and that will preserve everything (ratings, play counts, podcasts, auto-downloaded artwork, ...), is the following. The only catch is that you need to use exactly the same Windows user name on your new PC as on the old one. For Mac OS X the same story holds.

Copy the entire folder C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\My Documents\My Music\iTunes from your old PC to the new one. For OS X this is /Users/YourUserName/Music/iTunes.
If you let iTunes organize your music and let it copy every added track to the "iTunes Music folder", you're pretty much done, because all your music is inside that folder. Otherwise, if you organize your MP3/AAC files yourself and the files are not inside the iTunes folder, just copy your custom music folder(s) to your new PC and make sure they have exactly the same paths as on the old PC. That's it. Install iTunes on your new PC and it will show all your playlists with ratings, album art and play counts.

I think this method is the easiest you can get. You will need to copy your music anyway, so by just keeping everything the same you don't have to do anything else than the copying itself.

If you used a different user name, it might still work, but I doubt it. The absolute paths to each file are stored in the Library files. iTunes might be smart enough to replace the old user name with the new one, but don't count on it. You can still use this method in such case, though, but it requires a bit more work. By deleting the "iTunes Library.itl" file and doing a search&replace in the "iTunes Music Library.xml" file, iTunes will rebuild its library using the .xml file and it will use the new paths.

In bewilderment trying to figure out what it is I've done at the time 3 years ago... . The method you've described, when rebuilding the deleting .itl file, sets "date added" to today's date. And what's a girl to do, when all she wants to do is listen to the music added this week?

What I do see in my iTunes is that "date added" is almost 2 years earlier than the purchase of my MacBook. So I somehow managed to transfer the enire library intact...

Angry itunes - 01-23-2008, 01:47 AM

hello and good day.

i hate itunes. i just got a new 160 gig vid and have had nothing but problems running itunes on a pc. i had an old 2nd or 3rd generation that worked flawlessly on my pc running music match jukebox. the earjack broke twice on me. the first time i was able to send it in and they fixed it. the second time i found out that nobody wants to fix the earjacks on the old models, so no its a paper weight.

thats fine i was looking forward to the new ipod models. i found a nano and used this for awhile. just like my 160 gig i had trouble with itunes on my pc. it constantly freezes up and i takes for ever to load itunes and half the time my device will not show up in itunes. itunes wants me to reformat my ipod all the time after i have put a ton of music on it. im just not very happy with itunes but i dont think i have any choice at this point. i have done all the nessecary steps on updating my software on both the cpu and ipod. from what i have read in other forums seems like this i a common problem. maybe apple just want me to get a mac. which i just might one of these days.

thanks and hope all is well around these parts.

Hi Shadman.

Nice to see you drop by the forum every now and then and I trust that all is well (disregarding your iPod/PC issues, I mean )
