Parallels - 11-29-2007, 12:04 AM

Hey folks, anybody there installed parallels on the Mac? I am so tired of having to use the Mac edition of Excel, that I would actually spend the money THE LEGAL WAY to have parallels and Windows on my Mac. Unfortunately, I don't know a thing about what the hell I need in order to make that magic happen. If anyone knows or has a site to point me to that would explain this to me like I am a 5-year-old, I would greatly appreciate!

Hi Frunze, nice to see you around here again

What's this 'Mac' of which you speak?

Wikipedia has an entry for Parallels here: Parallels Desktop for Mac - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

What Parallels does is emulate the hardware of a PC on recent (Tiger or Leopard) versions of the Mac OS, but you still need a copy of Windows (preferably XP) to install on it, and also a copy of Microsoft Excel. Amazon lists Parallels + XP Home Retail for $240 and Excel Home edition for $125 so the cost is not trivial.

There's a guide to setting it all up here: How To: Run other OSes on your Mac with Parallels Workstation - The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) . It's a bit out of date, but it should give you a general idea of what's involved.

Macs are way off the beaten track for me but I hope this is some help.

Hi GM! Good to be back. Had to take a break for a while, but hey - I got a sexy new avatar, no?

Thanks for the links. Looks like lots of good info. Working on it now... will let you know how this turns out.

Hi Frunze.

It's been awhile since Cornutopian was here the last time - but maybe he became a father (like Kalvin) and had to take a break

Nah. Don't think so. What about Koenfucius? He explained to me about IP addresses once, I was quite impressed.

Of course, Gluteus Maximus totally knows his stuff, I am still reading the parallels link he posted. GM, you da man.

Frunze, did you know I met Kalvin in real life? It was absolutely awesome. We met in Barcelona.

Not sure if it was before or after you went on hiatus.
