PC Media Player - 05-13-2008, 11:09 AM

Hi

Can anyone recommend a reliable free alternative to Windows Media Player or Real Player?

Hi Jay150,
I asked a very similar question about itunes a few weeks ago (http://www.aom3.org/forum/computing/...es-itunes.html) and have been very happy with mediamonkey. Was a little bit fiddly to set up with last.fm, but it is working fine now. It will easily transfer all of your stuff (including play counts & ratings) from windows media as well ,
Cheers,
Dave

Hi Solaris

Long time no speak

Now mainly drug free

In media player I can sort by album artist rather by artist - Do you know if it can be done the same way in Media Monkey . Both times I tried MM and loaded a library it loaded by artist name rather than album artist. A small problem but one that currently chains me to Mediaplayer without a massive overhaul of how I currently catalogue.

Has anybody paid for the extended MM ?

Cheers

Load MediaMonkey. Left click the folder which contains all your albums. Then left click the album bar (on top) either once or twice (depending on whether you prefer descending or ascending sorting of the albums). From now on MediaMonkey will remember this setting

Personally I have always meant that Windows Media Player stinks

Thanks Solaris

No, it is me that is relatively drugs free - well almost .

I do not think my problem of 'album artist' vs 'artist' we be solved by your destructions above. Early mediaplayer displayed by 'artist' but more recent versions sort by 'album artist' and when I tag my tracks they can be completely different particularly for classical - the 'artist' is usually designated by composer and 'album artist' the conductor or soloist.

I started using media player as a Naif - now I know better but alas have tagged 35,000 + tracks to fit the damn thing!

Like Damo, I use Winamp because it's simple to use, and I've been using it for many years and has hundreds of cool skins with different themes.

It is not as efficent as MediaMonkey for organizing files, but it is a
great player with cool features.

Hi Elfcall, I am not entirely sure what you are trying to do, but you can easily add the album artist to the tool bar filter by just right clicking on the tool bar and selecting 'album artist'. Clicking on it then reverses the alphabetical order. This may be exactly what Solaris has just suggested. You can also easily add composer and or conductor to the tool bar filter (along with a hundred other things).
NB. I paid the £20 odd for the 'gold' package as I definitely needed the Auotplaylist option. Works very well indeed,
Cheers,
Dave C

Like you, Dave, I was not 100 %, if I was even answering Elf's question - but you're right: The above described (in red) was exactly what I was trying to explain

The option to choose which categories you want to display somehow went missing in my post, though
