Virtual Storage - 08-22-2007, 03:20 PM

Hi

Does anyone use virtual storage for backing up their music collection / other files etc ?

Does anyone have any experience with this crowd for example ?

F2S Virtual Vault - Free Online Data Storage & Backup Space

Cheers

Don't know why i never thought of this. I do have an external hard drive for backup purposes, but never thought of online backup.

Probably because it would take me weeks to upload gigs of my music collection. Ive heard very good things from Mozy Online Backup: Free. Automatic. Secure. (but costs $5/month) and also good comments from MediaMax - Free Online Storage - Share Videos and Photos - Online MP3 Access

Hi AOM3

I already back up my collection too but have thought for a while there must be another alternative - belt and braces

It just seems too good to be true - and if something is too good to be true then it ususally is

I'll wait a couple of days to see if anybody here comes up with something - if not i reckon I might try with something small and insignficant and see where we go with it

Elfcall

I'll report back what happens

Just had a quick look through mozy - they look a competent outfit but at the rates of uploading they are talking about it could take weeks for my collection! They seem to be limited to one PC too!

Hi Elfcall,
A friend of mine is very satisfied with this one:

MP3tunes Music Locker: Your Music Everywhere

I haven't tested it, because my upload speed is slower than something really slow...

I hope you'll like it!

I have 4 computers signed up to 'mozy free' for backing up critical data (mostly documents and settings). It has worked faultlessly for 6 months and after the initial backup it does incremental backups of the nominated folders every 2 hours or as set by the user. There is no noticeable slowdown of running applications when these backups are being carried out automatically. The initial backup of a large amount of data (which you pay for if it is more than 2 gig) can be done over an extended period by pausing and resuming when convenient e.g. overnight. As broadband gets faster and more widely available these services are likely to become cheaper. Mozy is very convenient - a genuine off-site 'set and forget' backup solution.

Edit: Sorry about the duplicate post. When I hit the submit button the first time I got a server error message. I still am at 21.19 EAST.
Hi Squash and thanks - that was really useful.
Do you have to pay for each pc that you are able to access mozy with? - for example I would backup from my home PC and would like to access the files from my work PC - but would not want to back up from there at all but if I had to pay x2 I would think twice.

Each computer is registered to a different user with their own email address - all members of my immediate family with gmail accounts. If you sign up for a free account you get 2gig of storage. If you refer someone else you get a bonus 250gb and so does the person you refer As a result I have almost 3 gig on one computer and less than that on the other three. Obviously, you have to be able to restore your stored data from any computer conected to the internet in the event that, for example, some low mongrel steals your laptop.
However, even if I had a paid 100 gig available, I would not use this as my only means of backup. A seperate physical backup is a must - even if you only do it once a month.
I'm not sure this answers you query - but it might be useful.

So you can connect to the mozy account from any computer and retrieve files at no extra cost? Also if you referred me, both me and you get 250GB?

Also wasn't too happy with this:

Quote:
If you delete the working copy on your machine and then run a backup, Mozy will assume that you no longer need a backup copy, since you got rid of the working copy, and will mark the file to be removed from our system in 30 days. (We keep it on file for 30 days, just in case you change your mind.) After 30 days, you cannot get these files back.

If you want Mozy to keep the files after they are deleted from your computer, this is referred to as an archiving service and is currently not offered. If you have suggestions for us on how you would like to see us implement an archiving service, email support@mozy.com
