Bit rate choices??? - 08-25-2007, 07:14 PM

Hi to everybody

New to this. Have read various threads regarding bit rates and although I understand the basics and currently using MP3 extreme 240 kbps, I wondered if the experts out there could explain more about the options? I understand difference between CBR and VBR but keen to find out quality differences between standard VBR settings MP3 and say extreme settings? I use MP3 at the moment due to standardisation as I don't want to end of with files that will not play on future equipment.

I know that we all need to make our own choices based on perceived sound quality and the music system used but it would be good to find out more about the quality settings say extreme v VBR 256???

Look forward to receiving comments.

Thanks Bruno. This answers most of my queries. What bitrate do you tend to use? Do you think there is much difference between extreme VBR preset and 256 VBR?

You know, music experts usually say you can't really tell the difference between high bitrates if you aren't using high-end audio systems - and mine isn't high-end at all! .
For classical and jazz music I'm mostly using 320kbps: maybe I'm wasting space, but I want to preserve as much of the original music as possible. For simple pop songs 192kbps is more than enough for me.
But I'm sure that someone with a better audio system will give you a more detailed reply!

I find there is a real and very notable difference between 192kbs and 320kbs when played through a good system. If you mainly listen to cheap earbuds then save your time and space.

If you ruining your hearing like I have 128 is more than enough. Hell my ears are so hosed 2 is probably enough.

Thankfully this forum is written and not spoken. Now where are my damned glasses?

at 128 the subs begin to suffer noticeably so it doesn't matter how bad your hearing is, your body will begin to notice a difference.
