Playing 384 kb/s MP3s - 12-11-2007, 05:50 PM

I just downloaded an album in the original 384 kb/s, but can't seem to play any of the MP3s. Tried Winamp, foobar2k, Windows Media Player, Media Player Classic, iTunes and even Adobe Audition (formerly CoolEdit). No luck! Does anyone know what I need to play these MP3 files? I guess MP3 spec only goes up to 320 kb/s, that's why I may be seeing these problems.... or maybe the MP3s are faulty.

Anyone have some advice?
Thanks! Mikity

Hello Mikity,

I once was going to purchase the 384 kb/s put I got a pop up window
stating a warning that it might not play on your usual player
so I was scared off, and went to 320 kb/s for that bit of Mozart.

I'm sure one of our more knowledgeable members will come along
will come along and give us more details and information about this
situation.

Hang in there,

Nightfly

Hi Mikity.

From the post in the link below, I can see that you were actually "warned" about downloading in 384 kbps MP3 almost half a year ago: http://www.aom3.org/forum/allofmp3-m....html#post6479

Please read this thread starting with post 88: http://www.aom3.org/forum/allofmp3-m....html#post8268

Look especially for the posts made by forum member Red Smurf...
I hope there's something there, which will be of help to you

Hi Mikity

The free CoolPlayer from http://coolplayer.sourceforge.net/?download plays these files.

This is a very small player that doesn't need installing, just unzip it and run the .exe . Right-click the player for options.

I've run into this issue before, and to this day have been to busy to sort this out. I believe Red Smurf wrote a really great instruction for me at the time.

Thanks guys for the replies! Yes indeed, CoolPlayer managed to play these freeform MP3 files, and I used lame.exe --decode to convert them to WAV and can transcode to something more compatible from there.

Appreciate the help!

Is there anything that can resample MP3s from one bitrate to another, without stopping, without simply dumping out WAVs that the user has to encode himself?

Hi MP3junk1E

For a free file format converter, see this thread http://www.aom3.org/forum/computing/1169-flac-mp3.html . Note that this does not convert 384kb/s mp3s.

Alternatively, if you just want to convert between different mp3 bitrates, use RazorLame
http://www.dors.de/razorlame/download.php , a front end for your Lame encoder. This does convert 384kb/s mp3s.
