solaris, i knew you were going to hinge on this sentence. and right you are, to a
point. you also know how amazed i am (and many others) how you are able to
find, and then even let people have, the most obscure pieces of music.
but can you find the 5 minute piece that my (now deceased) father played on his
harmonica for my sisters birthday, in 1980? or my own highschool band, for the
opening of the gym, in 19xx? recorded then in, what we thought, almost studio
quality, on a REVOX G36, and now sounding totally muffled?
a few very rare recordings out of 1904, that were reconstituted even by the
Fraunhofer Institute from old wire machines, and really DO sound better thru
the X-Mod? by just pressing a button?
still betting?

Hi Henry
I don't know, if I would be able to find you, your father or your sister on the Internet - but when it comes to old recordings I might fare a little better
Try downloading a few of these and put them through your X-Mod: www.jazz-on-line.com
Note: These are totally legal to download (because of their extensive age)

perfect example, like many of my 1950 recordings too that plainly are not available
in a better versions. take my old django reinhardt's that i like so much. or my live
recordings of gypsy music, not that old, and certainly substandard by technical terms,
but music that makes you sit upright.
it is, though a pity, that the bridge is still many years away, and i cant let you listen
immediately and right now: with the X-Mod only 1/3rd up, they would sound better,
on a moderate to good sound system.

Re-reading this, I can see a place for Xmod. Poor recordings will benefit as this should help the perceived clarity however it's not going to recover lost details.

jazzy, if y get a chance, just try it. it should set you back just +/- $25
these days. and as long as you dont overdo it (which is what many young
people do), the effect is pleasant on many an old (or plainly bad) recording.
oh yes, it cannot 'recover' lost details - and it is not meant to do that anyhow.
but it can emulate them, recreate some of them, and if applied with sense,
make for a more pleasant listening experience. the ear is easily fooled.
and that, to me, who usually sits in front of a stereo system of considerable
$$$s, is a very valuable argument.

PS: how many laptops have lousy sound outputs? no line inputs at all? THAT
alone is worth quite a bit. even if you use the X-Mod as a straight-thru USB
sound interface, with no sound effects added at all, but the volume control,
it sounds a 100 times better than many laptops alone.

Can you please tell me how Xmod makes Paul Weller's "Broken Stones" sound. Turning the Crysiliser on my X-fi Music soundcard takes away the dynamics and makes the bass boomy and treble clinical and harsh.

>> No technology known to mankind can make Paul Weller sound good
not quite fair, but it fits the recording i have here. actually, the older JAM versions would have been a
better example. the BrokenStones here is live, and already a bit harsh and clipping from the outset.
using the X-Mod makes at least the drums (snares and hi-hat) comes out much clearer, and his
voice also becomes rounder, the words more understandable. not quite the contents, though ...
certainly no booming bass on this on.
are you sure you are just using the crystalizer, and not the other gimmicky settings there are?
