Invention that I am sure is already around - 07-31-2008, 04:34 AM

Hi everyone,

Here is what I want to do. I have roughly 1000+ dvd's and am wanting to get rid of about 80% of them. What I would like to figure out is how to do something similiar to what Netflix is doing with the Roku box ( www.roku.com/netflix ) but obviously only for my house. Is it possible to rip all the dvd's somehow to my hard drive (several 1TB back-ups or some type of server set-up of which I would have no idea how to do), and then be able to use that box hooked up to my HD TV without having a PC near it. I know that vaguely this was the idea for Apple TV.

First off, how much quality will I lose in the rip? Second, is this a stupid idea? The only reason I really want to do this is to clear space of all these dvd's. I'd love to do it with my cd's somehow too, all I would need is a back-up HD that can handle it and somehow connect to a stereo. All this sounds a little expensive though is my guess.

Without being too technical, tell me what you think or point me in the right direction.

Of course it is possible to put all of your DVD's and CD's onto external hard drives (and play them from there) - but you have to have plenty of 1 TB ones to 'house' several thousands of DVD's and CD's as image files.

It will also be a monotonous process - but in the end you won't regret it - I guarantee

More than 50% of all DVD's will suffer no quality loss what so ever, when being ripped - the rest anywhere from 0.1% to 45% depending on length and use of colouration and so forth.

When you rip your DVD's to image files you even get to throw away all the unnecessary subtitles, audio streams, menus and trailers - including the "You wouldn't steal a car..."-nonsense

I'll bet that you will choose to store only the movie, the English audio stream and maybe the English subtitles - but as I said: YOU choose

This is where you start (and end ): SlySoft Products | Copy Movie DVDs with AnyDVD and CloneDVD

Feel free to throw me a PM if you have any follow up questions after you have studied their "couldn't live without"-software and visited their forum

mehrens, having a look at slysoft is an exccellent start. what i would to too,
is first to determine with how much a quality loss you can do with. if you only
have standard size HD TV, and do not plan to go into extreme HQ or even
projection, that is already one point.

sound is another issue: will you use / need 6 channel surround, or will
stereo or a matrixed multichannel do?

you then might want to look into conversion into DIVX/AVI files, which,
depending on compression, saves you as much as 3/4 of the space.

do a few test runs, watch a movie with 25%, 50%, 75% reduced space
and see what you can live with.

there are plenty of boxes (100s ?) that then, with built in or external HDDs,
play your movies on a TV. i can give you a few examples if you want, but
looking around will make your head swirl anyhow, within hours.

and then think of the time it will take to 'conserve' your movies: together
with some cleaning up, catalogueing and sorting out things, you might
think of two hours per movie, all-in.

lots of free time needed.

and: there are some totally loss-less copying systems that still reduce space by about
30-50%, but playback then is proprietory and only possible thru certain machines and
computers. if need be, will update you on that too.

greets - henry

Once you get it all copied from dvd/cd to a harddrive, you'll be in a situation as I was,and I asked about it here (mp3/ogg to home stereo).
A lot of good suggestions here.

I have no advice to offer on ripping videos.
Movies just aren't for me.
I like MUSIC.

I went with a HP laptop.
I also bought a 301 cd changer. before the laptop idea.
It takes quite some time sort through a collection and burn 300 cd's.

Pioneer also has a 301 dvd changer as well.
I read a LOT of bad reviews about the Sony 300 changer so go with Pioneer if you think you might like this idea.

I dated a guy once who had a 100-cd changer, and one time we came to his place and he put the music on, and among 100 CDs, there was NOT ONE that I cared to listen to. I knew then that it was time to get out of that useless relationship!

I once swapped iPods with a guy friend overnight. That's 1000 worth of CDs right there (at least!) and we couldn't find one song that we both enjoyed. Complete musical incompatibility. This guy is one of my best friends!

hello mehrens2112,

i see your back to talking about these dreaded dvds that you have had issues with since joining the forum. the last time we talked you needed to dumped these items to gain money. now you say your out of room.

if you decide to take action and proceed. you will spend hundreds of dollars on hard drives, plus all the time ripping them to an external hard drive.(which can take up to an hour per dvd, not sure how long hd takes.)

if i were you i would dl dvd decrypter, i have used it to rip a ton of cds. it can be found free on the net, plus it will rip any dvd you throw at it. after that i would pick the dvds you can't live without and start ripping.

1000 dvds would take much time and money to rip in my opinion. with that being said why not just hang on to them? if space is an issue buy some fanzy dvd storage unit.

thanks and good luck with you issue.

cr

ps if you decide to unload the 1000 cds let me know and ill shoot you a number. my women loves to watch dvds and storage is not a problem for me.

Vik & Frunze,
I though this was the norm with relationships. My wife and I have virtually no overlap in our musical tastes. She like Latin / Jazz / classical type music, which all come pretty much at the bottom of my play lists. I think this works though as when we are in the same room together, we turn off the music (as we would never be able to agree on what is to be played) and do other stuff
