I guess this is what happens when you start mixing your oggs with your mp3s.

Rolly,

Seriously ...here's a product by DFX that connects your Mp3s
to your Audio system..I don't know if this is what you're looking
for.But I do use the DFX sound enhancement software for years,
and enjoy it a great deal and I noticed this when I was on their
site.

Here's the link:

FXsound.com - MP3 Connector: Computer and iPod to Home Stereo Audio Adapter Cable

I'll have a look at that link.
EDIT:
I,ve seen this already. Not a bad option if I were to use my current box,and route the cable around a few corners.

I've kinda starting leaning toward finding myself a laptop.
This way I should be able to hold a lot of files,is neat and compact to fit on a audio shelf, has a large lcd,and use the line out to connect to my amp.
What do you think?
I know it isn't the cheapest way to go,but it seems to be the most versatile.
All the mp3 players I've looked at are 8GB at most, and aren't expandable in memory.
A tower sized box is large, needs an external monitor, and would look rather ugly sitting on my audio shelf.
I'm still looking for my best option.

Staggy,

This looks like a really nice set up.Do you or do you know
anyone who is using this transmit system of Mp3s to your
Audio system, and does it degrade the sound in anyway?

That sounds like a great idea you could have the Laptop(they have come down in price) as your front end to your audio system and you can get
steaming audio as well and download video media as well(if your TV screen is near by)
and you can attache a external 500GB HD for $129 from Western Digital
and never worry about taking up space on your laptop drive..you can keep
the laptop lean and mean(fast).....for a while...

I don't know anyone who has this system. I've seen but not heard them. I'd imagine pure audiophiles would be outraged.

Like you I think I like the idea but I would need a bit of convincing, particularly since its pretty costly

The link isn't live,but a copy/paste works.
The prices are in UK currency.I'll have to try and find if this is available in the US.
Overseas shipping is a killer.

Here are a couple more similiar set ups.
They are kits that you have to assemble yourself.

One more that might be worth looking at.

[quote=rolly;27141]What do you mean for a while?

We always mean to keep our new drives and systems
uncluttered, but after awhile no matter how much maintenance
you do or good intentions you have ..after a year you just
naturally accumulate data and programs...
and your system is not as mean and lean as the day you bought it...

well at least that's what happens to me...

OK,I see what you mean now.
Well, this laptop wouldn't be used for computing.
A light window manager like fluxbox or xfce is all that I would need, and amarok to decode the files and create playlists.

Going off topic>>
Now that you mention this, you do keep all your data on a seperate partition don't you?
When I used to use windows, unless I installed a development environment,I had XP running just fine in a 10GB partition.
15GB if you like to install more than you really need,or keep two versions of the same apps aboard.
Everything else I kept in seperate data partitions.
Then I used Image For Dos for a backup utility.

I found it easier to install all the applications I would most likely use in the very beginning, then immediately create the DOS backup.
If it started to slow down, viruses whatever, the backup took 5 minutes to overwrite C,and all my apps were already there, mean and lean just like the day I bought it.
Much faster than editing the registry.

If you ever had been infected with a virus, you probally know that getting rid of the virus isn't so much the hard part at all.
The hard part is figuring out what the virus had done while it was there, and fixing that.
Most people don't consider that, and just remove the virus.
Run the backup, takes 5 minutes to overwrite C,and forget about it.
Mean and lean again.

If you do want to look into this,do select the DOS version, not the windows version.
It doesn't need the windows OS to work.It needs DOS to work, same as windows does.
It is a very good product.

OK.Don't mind me.I just like to share my experiences.

Hi rolly

your point about imaging drives is well made, but I hate spending good money when I can do it for free For anyone who's running WindowsXP and wants to roll their sleeves up, you can make a BartPE boot disk with the SelfImage Plugin, and use it to write compressed partition or whole-disk images across a network. If you first use Eraser to overwrite unused space with zeroes, you end up with an image file around half the size of the original data. All for free
