I was into photography years ago but became lazy and put the SLR aside for a small and convenient automatic digital. However, the Lab bought me a good digital SLR for Xmas that is backward compatible with all my old manual lenses which have fantastic optics. I am amazed at the things I can do with this camera, paticularly when I shoot in RAW mode and then fine tune with Photoshop. I gather from your recent avatars you also have an interest in photography.

I just recently got my first digital SLR - first any SLR. Very excited about it. Love photography. Would love to have time to get more serious about it, but recently haven't had any time at all. Mmmm, RAW

Squash and Vik,
What's your favorite recorded Carmen...I love that Opera..first one I ever
listened to and got into as a young man...I have the P.Domingo version,
but I don't care for him to much, and I gave away my Callas vinyl box set
away as a gift that was wonderful..
any recommends would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Nightfly

I am a huge fan of Leontyne Price and the recording under Karajan with Franco Correlli, Mirella Freni and Robert Merrill is a favorite. It is the quality of the voices that make this a standout although the style of the production is in the "Grand" tradition rather than the lighter, more dramatic interpretations favoured these days. Of this later style, I do not own, but have heard an excellent all French production conducted by Andre Cluytens with Martha Angelici singing the title role.

I have heard the Callas recording, which is fantastic of course. One that comes to mind is a wonderful that I've seen with a russian Carmen, opposite Placido Domingo. It's just not coming to mind right now what her name is. A famous Russian mezzo..... I'll try to remember and will ask my parents if they might know. I've seen a few Carmens in past few years, but none really left an indellible mark.

Yes and No. A couple of years ago a friend lent me a DVD of a famous 1978 Zeffarelli production of Carmen by the Vienna State Opera. Domingo I remembered and also that Carmen was sung by a Russian mezzo whose name I could not remember. I looked up the DVD on Amazon. The DVD is out on Naxos and the sound is very good. I'm not aware of this being on CD or online anywhere.
Another great Russian singer I am sure your parents will be aware of (and a favorite of mine) is the bass, Evgeny Nesterenko - he does the BEST 'Song of the Volga Boatmen'. He also did the definitive Boris Gudunov with, you guessed it, Elena Obraztsova.
