The (Obsolete) Technologies Thread - 05-08-2008, 10:39 PM

Ok, so I gave in about a year ago and a half ago and bought an HD DVD player. DOH!! That's me waving like a doofus.

I thought that since Sony seems to lose out on all things they try to make commercial and propietary (BetaMax, Mini Disc, etc), I thought it was a safe bet that HD would win over Blu Ray merely because Microsoft and Toshiba backed it and it was more affordable. Boy was I wrong! Anyone else make this mistake? I now have a $399 player and about 35-40 HD movies that are in essence, worthless. I tried to sell them locally, and I was denied. I paid upwards of $30 a disc or more in some cases, and want to at least re-coup some of my dough I spent. Anyone gone through this?

No, I am still not buying Blu Ray (at least not until it comes down in price)

I empathize with you, mehrens2112

I bought a Denon DMD-800 mini disc stereo player in the beginning of the year 2000. Then the technology suddenly just laid down and died (because of the increasingly more popular mp3 players)

That one piece of machinery set me back $800 and I have still to use it for its 10th time Now it never will reach this mile stone - not owned by me anyway... Willing to trade your HD-DVD player for a mini disc stereo player?

P.S. Did you read my PM to you the other day?

Yes, I did and thanks for that!

I also have a Sony MD player and Portable one as well. I think they are both in storage somewhere.

At least my HD player plays regular all region dvd's too

Hey, in 20 years time your HD & mini disc will sell on e-bay for a fortune. Just remember to keep the boxes

It's been a long time

Yikes, you have my sympathies. It must be awful to be an early investor...

Personally, at the moment I see no use for hi def. I have a hi def videocamera but the image quality is good enough on standard def TVs and I don't see myself upgrading anytime soon. A Blu ray drive in my PC might be useful for data storage though!

How many action heroes in original boxes and in mint condition do you have in your attic, Dave?

You also got the image of a lazy dude (with cheese doodle smelling fingers) inside your head, when read Dave's post, Princess?

Note: This was a great sequel to an equally great movie

The storage option is killer for Blu Ray, I have a blu ray burner on my laptop. VERY NICE!!! However, the playback on a HD tv with a cable BITES!!!

We are looking at a HD videocamera as well with little ones on the way. Any recommendations? My wife has looked at a few, but we want to keep the price down. I've been using salescircular.com weekly.

yeah I got those boxes!!! Moved them 4 times, but I have them. And no, I don't have those action figures boxed up in the attic either. Mom made me give those away (insert jokes here)...lol
