SD card boombox? - 08-24-2008, 05:47 PM

I have been trying to find a "boombox" that is capable of playing from a SD card.
I have found a few items, but they are all crappy looking devices that if you were talking you probally wouldn't hear the thing play.
I want a real boombox.
Something with some good circuitry in it.
Something like this.
I have one of these, and this radio will crank!
And you can see the price isn't that high.

I can hook an .mp3 player to it,but I'm looking for something that uses a SD card or USB device "built in".
Everything I've seen so far is nothing more than some cheap small clock radio device.

I thought I would have a lot of choices to make on picking one,but as it appears, nobody seems to have produced these yet.
That's very strange.

EDIT:
Something easily purchased in the US.

I will give radio shack a look.Haven't check them.

I did find a few with MP3 cd capabilties, but cd's on the jobsite(at least my jobsite ) wouldn't make it through the day before being damaged.
That's why I'm looking for one that can use a SD card.
Plus the SD card can hold up to 4GB music!

Good thinking! Maybe a box with a HD.

Good Luck in your Quest....

Hi rolly

Since 'functional' seems to be more important than 'elegant' here, why not throw something together yourself, using e.g. a car radio with usb/sd ports, a couple of speakers, a 12v psu, and build it all into a rugged tool case? Portable, tough, runs off mains or car battery, should do the job if you can find a radio with a decent menu for the mp3s. And fun to build.

You got me pegged to a T.
I used to do things like this, everybody always laughed.

I am using now an mp3 player hooked up to the radio via a patch cable, this works OK but not without problems.
I have to turn the volume up on the mp3 player.
The mp3 player needs batteries.
It is small and hard to read the menu.

I just might look into your idea of building one.
Can't promise you it won't be ugly looking!

An old milk crate for a secure cage?
Nah.

Hi rolly

Yes it's fun to build stuff, isn't it? I don't do it much myself any more (apart from computers, of course), since you can buy almost anything ready-made and cheaper...

I had a bit of a hunt around and probably got the same hits you did - Makita, Bosch, DeWalt site radios, beach radios, iPod docks, but nothing exactly like what you want. The really annoying thing is that you KNOW there must be one out there somewhere

Do post a piccy if you end up building one

rolly, sorry for such a late answer, but i had to check first. the things you are looking
for, SD card and USB inputs, are still made. for street musicians, for kids, for public
presentations, and similar. maybe in not quite as sturdy a version as the
drive-over-by-a-tank sample you mentioned, but still outdoor versions that
would take some beatings. and sound boooooombox-loud.

problem is, they are not sold in the western markets anymore. you get them
in the mideast, the indian subcontinent, parts of africa, russia and even the balkans,
but not anywhere where AMAZON would look. give me a PM how interested you
really are, and i find a few samples for you, pictures and prices. also let me know
where you are, and i find some way to get it there.

greets - henry
