Vista Codecs for WMP help - 03-15-2008, 02:39 AM

Can any of the computer guru's here send me a good link for Vista Codec's so I can play AVI files in Windows Media Player 11? This seems to be a common problem, and I have googled for help, but there seems to be alot of misinformation out there, so I wanted to check here before dl a bunch of files.

As always, thank to all for any help.

Majorgeeks is more reputable than other sites, but in general I tend to avoid codec packs (e.g. K-Lite codec pack) as they tend to screw up your computer or sometimes contain trojans and viruses. Even if there's no virus though, some of the codecs take over the functions of other software plugins which can be annoying. E.g. last time I installed ffdshow (included in that codec pack) it took over DVD video and audio, resulting in my DVD software (both Nvidia and Power DVD) not working. It was a hassle getting rid of it, as uninstalling didn't delete it from the system.

If an .avi doesn't play in Windows Media Player, it's likely it's a Divx or Xvid file, both of which are easy enough to get hold of from their official sites - and you know what you're installing.
