Western Digital Turns External Hard into HD Media Players - 11-04-2008, 08:14 PM

Western Digital has recently introduced a simple way for consumers to play their stored digital content on their HDTV in Full-HD 1080p resolution. The WD TV™ Media Player connects to a user's TV or home theater and plays digital movies, music and photos from WD's My Passport™ portable drive or other USB mass storage device.

Take a look at the full spec and functions here ---> WD TV HD Media Player ( WDAVN00 )

Hi Hirs,

Looks interesting - can't seem to find anyone selling it though.

I have been looking for a better way to show photos on my HDTV and this looks as if it could be the answer.

Hi Ashley, yes I was quite interested in it too.

The Register seems to think it goes on sale in the UK today for £79 so I'm sure if you keep looking you should find it for sale soon.

Thanks Hirs, at £79 it looks to be a good buy.
It might even be a little less when it becomes readily available, I have made a note of it for future reference.

My Sony HDTV has a USB slot to plug a memory stick into and an option to play the files as a slide show but it only really works about 50% of the time. It will get so far through and then appears to lose the drive and you have to quit, re-insert the memory stick and start again - frustrating to say the least!

Shame really as apart from that the TV is very good.
The HD picture via Sky is pretty impressive.

I got one... - 11-25-2008, 08:28 AM

I bought one because it plays just about every audio and video file format you can poke a stick at (including Ogg Vorbis,FLAC and MKV ). And it comes with a program to convert those it doesn't (e.g.MOV) to a format that it does.

To my surprise, you can even plug an iPod into it and it will scan it and allow you to search and play artists, genres etc. Two USB storage devices can be connected at once.

The GUI is a bit clunky but better than I expected from the reviews.

Set-up is idiot proof. Most of the default settings are what most users would want anyway and changing settings is easy.

Happy to answer any questions.

Cheers,

Squash

I paid OZ$199 (about US$130) which is the WD recommended retail price here. I'm sure they will be discounted after Xmas. I picked one up in Sydney from Harris Technology. Their web site (ht.com.au) shows accurate stock levels of all stores in Oz.

Cheers,

Squash

Thanks Squash, sorry for not getting back to you last night but other things got in the way.

As you say they will probably be discounted after Christmas so I think I will wait until then to start looking. I think they are on sale here now in the UK but it's not desperately important so I will wait a few weeks.
