Got it. Better known to me as Baby Beethoven; the one where the penguins climb the staircase (if you don't understand, you need to buy the DVD),

I think the mere idea of there being a classical Top 10, made me compose "Ode to Sorrow"

there for us..I am aware of Marianne Antonsen she is a certainly a treasure
and I have a few recordings by her..The one you mentioned and Picking Up The Spirit more stripped down her and organ Gospel tunes..and they have that listed as Hip Hop...(shame on them). But "Blomster I Soweto" is a very special recording( by the way I just looked..they called it Jazz )
I listen more to authentic African music without the Western influence, they sing in either French or Congolese or their native dialect..but I love the
Music and the guitar playing..These guys were doing 17 min jams way
before The Grateful Dead...and the music is fresh and hypnotic to the Western ear..It takes a few listens to get pass the foreign language, but you can hear
great spirituality and richness in their voices that inspires and draws you in..
But I will trade you my African based for your Western mixed selections
when you find them.
.Maybe tomorrow night I will list my favorite
African recordings.

Thanks Squash,
Nightfly,
I have picked out few tracks of Western fused with African (in different ways and to varying degrees) that I enjoy. I have tried to keep it to music that is fairly upbeat. Also I have chosen songs that are available on Sparks/MM or Emusic so anyone else interested in the subject can sample and DL if they like what they hear.
Johnny Clegg - 'Scatterlings of Africa', 'Asimbonanga' (Sparks) and 'Impi' (Emusic)
Manu Dibango -'Mouvement Ewondo' and 'Bolingo City' off the album Kamer Feeling (Emusic)
Ginger Baker (drummer with the group Cream) - 'Brain Damage' off the album African Force (Emusic)
Marianne Antonsen - 'Blomster I Soweto' and 'Loven' off the album Blomster I Soweto (Emusic)
Joe Zawinul - 'Brown Street' and 'Carnavalito' off the album Brown Street (Sparks)
Ladysmith Black Mambazo - 'World in Union 95 (with P J Flowers)' and 'Shosoloza' off the album World in Union-Anthems (Sparks).
Also got to give a plug to 'Knocking on Heaven's Door' by Ladysmith with Dolly Parton (don't knock it till you'vr tried it))
Finally, Paul Simon - 'Pigs, Sheep and Wolves' off the album Your the One (Sparks)

That's it,

Squash

Squash,

Excellent List!

...and I will try the LSBM with Dolly Parton....but only
because you said so....
The next year after The African Force album, Ginger Baker did a album with African funk artist Fela Kuti called "Fela Kuti with Ginger Baker Live" check it out on Emusic.
I am familiar with these great artists, but will listen to these
songs specifically.
Now that you are back I will work on a African list.

Thanks for the list,

Nightfly

Thanks for the list,
OK, Dolly and LBM may be an aquired taste, but the song did originate in a western movie
I have been ridiculed by the labrador for not including at least one track off Angelique Kidjo's album Djin Djin on my list. So add the track 'Sedjedo' (with Ziggy Marley) (available on Sparks). She also does an amazing West African version of Ravel's Bolero on this album (but I won't go there as that would be wandering into 'Dolly" territory again).

Your Lab thanks you and I as well, Angelique Kidjo is one of Africa's
top Female singers..She has also has done some nice work with
Peter Gabriel. I have heard her Bolero, lets just say I admire
her taking musical chances......
But really she does try to do variable material, even Hendrix's Vodoo Chile
suited her big spirit.
