Johnny Whitehorse - 02-08-2008, 01:21 AM

Many years ago (when I was childless and free) I spent some time at a small ski resort in New Mexico owned and run by an Apache tribe. There I was exposed to the beautiful and haunting traditional music of flute, drum and chant. There was also quite a lot of music being created fusing the traditional to modern and the results were sometimes fantastic.
I was reminded of this when I spotted a new listing on Alltunes by Johnny Whitehorse called "Totemic Flute Chants". This is a "fusion" album of sublime, atmospheric melodies. His previous albums of similar work have been released under the name Robert Mirabal and are worth tracking down if you like this style of music.

I always go to American Indian meetings in the upper NY state area
during the summer where they play this music all day and into the night where they light a very large fire at sun set and do ceremonial dances and the drumming is amazing..different tribes come up to drum to represent..and each has a different chant and every so often there's some flute playing...
very hypnotic...the original trance music...
I saw this title but didn't check it out..thanks for pointing it out..
I'll go back and give it a listen..

Robert Mirabal is well represented on eMusic. His fusion album "Music From a Painted Cave" is well worth a listen.
